Deaf News: Deaf student bullied at the Alexander Graham Bell school.

CHICAGO, IL -- CBS News: A young Deaf boy says first he was bullied by some classmates and then a teacher allegedly joined in. The third-grader attends Alexander Graham Bell Elementary School in Chicago, where he says he’s been repeatedly hit and verbally abused by students.

One even allegedly threatened him using sign language. Earlier this year while at recess, Padilla says a boy hit him and tore his cochlear implant from his ear and head.

His mother, Christina Maldonado Padilla, says it was an act of both physical and emotional aggression.

“I think he’s fed up with it,” she says.

Christina says the alleged bully threw her son’s $45,000 cochlear implant somewhere on the playground and then the school sent Jason Padilla home without it. In fact, he didn’t get it back until the next day. His mother says it was broken from sitting in the rain.

“When we put it back together it was wet, so it was not working,” she says. “Jason was Deaf for three days.”

Christina says school officials never called to tell her about the incident and she didn’t find out about it until he got off the school bus without his implant.

She says the alleged bully was only suspended from recess for a few days. Meanwhile, Jason Padilla no longer wants to go to school.

His mother called their alderman, and that’s when she believes her son’s third-grade teacher retaliated, allegedly flicking her finger at his implant, causing swelling to his ear and head.

“He’s very afraid. It’s an everyday thing that we had to tell him, ‘Tomorrow no school, OK, OK,’ so he wouldn’t cry and then in the morning, deal with the reality that he has to go,” Christina says.

She also is concerned about the school’s solution to all of his alleged problems.

A Chicago Public School spokesperson says he was moved him from his third-grade class to a multi-age, self-contained class of two fifth-graders and nine fourth-graders, making him the only third-grader in the bunch.

A CPS spokesperson says: “While this matter is still being investigated to determine exactly what happened, we have been and continue to work closely with the student and his family to ensure that all of the services and resources that he needs are provided.”

Deaf viewers outraged by bizarre subtitles on the national U.K. broadcasting television.

LONDON, U.K. - 'Pulled your ball up!' Deaf viewers outraged by bizarre subtitles on Dancing On Ice. The National Deaf Children's Society has slammed ITV for its 'bizarre and confusing' captioning on the hit celebrity figure skating contest.

The programme has attracted an audience of more than 7 million but Deaf viewers are outraged by nonsensical wording claiming 'blasphemous' routines 'walk straight in the fridge'. Leading campaigners who want a good quality of life for Deaf adults and children said incoherent subtitles makes second-class citizens out of disability sufferers... Error captioning on television, which is not the first time the United Kingdom television media network has done it in the national broadcast.

The BBC came under fire last October from groups for the hard of hearing for its increasing number of bizarre gaffes, which have included calling the Labour leader 'Ed Miller Band' and the Church of England leader the 'arch bitch' of Canterbury.

The BBC has been criticized by Deaf campaign groups over "ludicrous" computer-generated subtitles that branded the Labor leader "Ed Miller Band" and announced a visit by the "Arch b**** of Canterbury".

Hard-of-Hearing viewers have been left "utterly perplexed" over a string of bizarre errors in subtitles during BBC programming, including the Ireland rugby team last week being renamed "Island"... Read More: digitalspy.ca/media/news/bbc-criticized-by-deaf-groups-over-subtitling-errors.html
LAS VEGAS, Nv. The Las Vegas Charter School of the Deaf, in the northwest valley, went bankrupt this summer after just three school years, said Bass, who's on the board of the school that took 10 years of planning to open.

Even worse, board members are now $90,000 in debt because of the school's costs, which government funding didn't come close to covering. In Nevada, charter schools are funded to fail, said Bass, who's too exhausted to play nice.

Her board realized that at the start, as do founders of most of the state's 31 charter schools.... Read more: lvrj.com/news/charter-school-for-deaf-signs-off-in-bankruptcy

Before opening, the charter school for the Deaf received donation commitments from four people totaling $100,000 a year for five years. The school got its $100,000 in 2008, but three donors dropped out in 2009 because of the recession. In 2010, the school struggled to find donors. Board members threw in thousands each. But that only staved off the inevitable.
