CNN SEATTLE - Exclusive interview with Super Bowl champion, Derrick Coleman, doesn't let his loss of hearing stand in his way of playing the game.



"As people hear about me being hard of hearing and making the best of it, the biggest thing that I want others to know is that excuses get you nowhere.



I know I've made some, but I was fortunate enough to have people in my corner who wouldn't let me use them. Whatever your dream is - go for it. Any reason for you not getting it is just an excuse.





Life is hard as it is, but when you have it in your mind that no matter what your dream is, you will try your hardest to achieve it. Your life will be more enjoyable, and it will make the struggle worth it.



Ever since I can remember, I always played sports. Most people would say I wouldn't succeed, but I proved them wrong by finding ways to make it work by finding ways that helped me hear and put me in a position to succeed. Was it easy? No, but it was worth it.



If you ask me what I'm most proud of, it's not just playing football in the NFL; it's graduating from Troy High School and from UCLA with a political science degree. I could have easily made excuses as to why I couldn't do my work and blamed it on not being able to hear well, but I didn't.



Some people ask me, do I wish that I had normal hearing like everyone else, and honestly looking back at my life now, I would say no.



Being Deaf and Hearing Impaired has made me who I am. The struggle, pain, tears, happiness and joy has put me in the position where I am today.



Don't let adversity define who you are. Let how you respond to diversity be who you are. Find a way. No excuses. It will be worth it. It was for me." Source

VIDEO [CC] Deaf Seahawks inspires young Deaf twins.



FLANDERS, N.J. - Nine-year-old twins Riley and Erin Kovalcik were born with a genetic condition that left them partially Deaf. Last week, they saw a TV commercial featuring the Seattle Seahawks’ Derrick Coleman.



"I thought it was very touching because I didn’t think there was any athlete that actually could play that could be exactly hearing impaired like me and Erin," Riley says. "Like, I mean, seriously!"



"I saw the Duracell battery commercial. I remembered him saying he was bullied, and I was like, 'What? How is he a football player? I mean, he's really strong, but how does he let them bully him?'" Erin says.



Riley herself was picked on in school and was told not to play sports - a warning she ignored. After the Seahawks won last weekend, Riley picked up a pencil.





"Dear my inspiration Derrick Coleman," she says, reading her letter. "I know how you feel. I also have hearing aids. Just try your best. I have faith in you."



Their father Jake tweeted a picture of the letter, hoping Coleman would see it.



"I just wanted him to know how much he's doing for Deaf kids and little kids and all kids with disabilities," Jake says. "It doesn’t matter that you're deaf. It doesn't matter that you may have some other disability. You can be exceptional too."



The Seattle Seahawks' Derrick Coleman makes fans' dream come true with tickets to the Super Bowl.

Achieve his dream - He taught himself to lip-reading to get something he relies on during games if you weren't wearing your hearing aids and what what I sound like right now. I know you've talked it. VIDEO: NBC's "The Doctors" Shines a spotlight on dogs for the Deaf - Oct 5th, 2012.



A Southern Oregon non-profit showed a national TV audience just how much it is making a difference in people's lives today. This as Central Point's Dogs for the Deaf was invited to be a special guest on NBC's syndicated show, "The Doctors."



NBC5's Laura Cavanaugh reports. The Rogue Valley's own Carrie Brooks took center stage in front of a national television audience Thursday on the set of NBC's "The Doctors." The certified dog trainer demonstrated how highly trained dogs, like Bonsai, help work sounds for those with hearing loss.

COLD LAKE, AB. - A YouTube video of an Alberta RCMP officer kicking Richard Claybert in the face has sparked an investigation and caught the attention of the province.



According to a statement released by RCMP, three officers from the Cold Lake detachment responded to complaints of a noisy party in a parking lot of a community hall early Saturday, Sept. 22.





While responding, one of the party organizers asked for police assistance in clearing the crowd. An intoxicated man refused to leave and two officers began the process of putting the man under arrest while the third officer continued crowd control. According to Metro Edmonton, it was the third time police were called to the hall that night.



RCMP have identified the man being arrested as 21-year-old Richard Claybert.



In the grainy, shaky footage posted to YouTube, Claybert appears face-down on the ground while two officers attempt to handcuff him. Onlookers taunt and yell at the officers and you can hear one man shouting "Seven-11 for the rest of your life, man. Seven-11," although it is not clear whether it is coming from a bystander or an officer... KENSINGTON, PA. - Deaf man shot during attempted robbery in Kensington.

Philadelphia police are investigating the shooting of a Deaf man in Kensington early Tuesday morning.



The shooting happened around 4:15 a.m. on the 1800 block of East Thayer Street.



Police say a Deaf man in his 20s was sitting on the front steps of a house with some friends when a suspect approached and announced a robbery.





Investigators say the suspect demanded money from the victim but the man did not understand. That is when the suspect fired a shot, hitting the victim in the stomach.

DENVER, CO. - Colorado film, 'Spirit of Love,' highlights Deaf community and life of NBA star, Mike Glenn. 'Spirit of Love: The Mike "Stinger" Glenn Story' takes basketball legend's story to big screen. The film will be presented with sign-language and captioning for all audiences. Anne Trujillo reports.



The recreation center in the heart of Denver's Swansea-Eylria neighborhood is busy for the fourth day of filming.



"Action! Rolling camera A," yells a young woman wearing headphones.



There are teens everywhere. Some are operating cameras and computers. Some are making their film debuts as young actors. There's even a retired NBA player in the mix.





All are under the careful direction of Colorado film producer Darla Rae.



"Make sure you keep your energy up. I need to feel the excitement in your voices," said Rae to the group of boys practicing their lines standing next to retired NBA player, Mike "Stinger" Glenn.



For nearly two weeks various locations in Denver have been transformed into scenes to replicate rural Georgia and locations where Glenn grew up.



"It's a feature film based on the story of how I established the nation's first basketball camp for the Deaf and hard of hearing," said Glenn.



Rae argues it's that and so much more. She says the film is named "Spirit of Love" after an award with the same name that Glenn received from the NBA Players Association honoring him for the positive impact he's had on Deaf communities across the country... VIDEO: Kansas budget cuts could mean bad news for the Kansas State School for the Deaf.



OLATHE, KS - A mandate to cut the budgets for Kansas state agencies could be bad news for a school in Olathe, Kan., that's been helping children since 1861.



In the kindergarten classroom at the Kansas School for the Deaf , kids are learning to communicate using their hands instead of their voices. They are immersed in American Sign Language.





Like the 140 other students at the school, they will be immersed in Deaf culture during their years here, learning to cope in a hearing world.



Mary Grove is a KSD senior. She's been a student here since she was 4 years old. "This is my second home, you know, and the people here are my family,’' she said.

OAXACA, MEXICO - The Oaxaca government has invested 56 million pesos ($4.4 million) to place at least about 230 security video cameras in the downtown historic city of Oaxaca and the suburbs that are monitored by Deaf and speech impaired police.






The camcorders are 15 meters (49 feet) high and can reach various points simultaneously with an infrared camera. Ignacio Villalobos Carranza, Deputy Secretary for the Ministry of Public Security of Oaxaca, said most of the monitoring of the 230 cameras is done by law enforcement officials that are hearing or speech impaired.



He noted these police officers have a very strong Deaf and visual sense and can better detect what is happening in different places where the cameras are located; they can often remotely read the conversations of people, to the benefit of this security system that operates 24 hours a day.



Spanish-language video from BBC Mundo Deaf police to monitor security cameras in Mexico - The ability to lip read conversations is a fantastic advantage, but the project raises the question of whether Deaf people would actually be better at security monitoring in general. As far as I know, there are no studies comparing hearing and Deaf people on specific monitoring tasks but there is evidence that Deaf people have certain advantages in visual attention.



This isn’t vision in general, such as having sharper visual acuity where there seems to be no difference, but there is good evidence that Deaf people are better at noticing things in the periphery of vision and detecting movement. This potentially makes them perfect for the job and likely better than their hearing colleagues. VIDEO: Deaf man makes plea for return of ear implants.



WILLOUGHBY HILLS, OH - A local rugby player had his ear implants stolen this past Saturday, and he says they were only 5 feet away!



It’s a big deal because Allen Lee, 23, is legally deaf in both ears and he needs his implants to work. Allen plays rugby for the Cleveland Eastern Rugby Team and was at a match in North Chagrin Park when someone took his bag that contained the implants.





Hazel Lee, Allen’s mother, called FOX 8 in a desperate attempt to track down his stolen hearing aids. Park rangers said they wish Allen would have reported the crime on Saturday – the day it happened – so they could have started their search right away... EXCLUSIVE VIDEO: NEW YORK CITY - Justice is blind, but that’s no help if you’re Deaf. A suspect in a Bronx murder is trying to get his videotaped confession tossed because he says he was misunderstood and confused by a sign-language interpreter.



Following a tip, cold-case investigators nabbed Gabriel Thompson, 48, in 2010 — 25 years after he allegedly stabbed and killed a man who was having an affair with Thompson’s live-in girlfriend.





Prosecutors say Thompson confessed to the murder, but he claims the cop who interpreted his answers during an interrogation ignored his request for a lawyer and misconstrued him.

SAN ANTONIO, TX - A Deaf couple claims two off-duty Bexar County Sheriff's deputies handcuffed them and roughed them up as they were shopping inside a west side convenience store. Now the two want to know why it happened in the first place.





Jeffrey Donovan and his girlfriend Mercedes Castellano were shopping inside the Express Mart on Ceralvo, off Zarzamora on Aug. 23 and had only been inside for about two minutes before deputies approached. Surveillance video shows how quickly the deputies came inside and cuffed the couple.

BELLEVILLE, NJ - The East Coast's Stop and Frisk law allowed New Jersey cops to stop a group of deaf black teenagers and harass them. A group of deaf men, on summer vacation from a Trenton trade school for the hearing-impaired, said they were stopped and manhandled by cops in Belleville, New Jersey Tuesday.



20 year old Isiah Isaac used “sign language” to tell the story to PIX 11 through his mother and brother. “It was six cars that surrounded them,” Isaac’s mother, Frances, said—as she followed his sign language in the family living room. “He said all the cop cars came over and blocked them in.”





17 year old Domonique Isaac - Isiah’s brother - said he was the only one of six, young men in the car who could hear. The driver, he said, was Deaf - and got out of the car to fetch his l icense from a bag in the trunk. Isaac said, “The passenger (in the front) tried to get out and explain to the officer that he’s Deaf.



The driver ended up on the other side of the car and they slammed him in the passenger’s seat. When he slammed him in, that’s when I tried telling him, ‘He’s Deaf, he’s DEAF.’” ... RAW VIDEO: Deaf Kentuckian woman mauled by pit bull dog.



LOUISVILLE, KY - A 59-year old Deaf woman who lives in an assisted adult care home because of her special needs is in the hospital after being mauled by a pit bull. She couldn't hear the dog coming or even form the words to say help.



Tony Simpson, who witnessed the attack, tells WDRB News, "I've never never seen nothing like that."



The two-year-old pit bull named Rambo sits quarantined in a steel cage at the Breckinridge County Animal Shelter.





Stacey Lucas and her fiance Tony Simpson say the last time they saw the dog in Cloverport, it was trying to tear Shirley Sturgeon apart.



Simpson says, "The dog was literally just eating the woman. He was not just biting her. He was tearing her meat off and swallowing it."
