VIDEO: Deaf News - Sign language interpreter Ashley Henderson stole the show at a flood press conference held by mayor the City of Houston.

HOUSTON, TX -- During Mayor Sylvester Turner's press conference to address Houston's disastrous flooding on Tuesday there was one person who stood out among the city's officials. But it wasn't a politician, member of an emergency agency, or a press officer. It was the sign language interpreter the city hired.

Ashley Henderson is an energetic interpreter who often works with the city, especially during televised press conferences that take place during disasters. She was there during last year's flooding and again this year. She's employed by the Nightingale Interpreting firm in Houston.

Her signing style became the subject of a Reddit.com post on Wednesday. It was hard to miss her enthusiastic facial expressions, and most people who commented on the post pointed out how that's just how effective sign language works.

"Yes, it may look funny to those who don't use or know sign language," Henderson told Chron.com.

"But it would look funny to (American Sign Language) users if there weren't any. Basically, if I talked English with no affect, intonation, pauses, it would be difficult for someone listening to pull the correct meaning, or to even be interested at all," she explained.

"Expressions are the lifeblood of ASL and provide the much needed grammar, tone, structure and meaning into an interpretation."

Henderson said she's been getting steady work assignments for city government in Houston for three years. She received her training at Lone Star College and became a certified sign language interpreter about six years ago. She enjoys her work but said sometimes people just don't get the importance of what she does.

"Some people complain about having to watch the interpreters next to whoever is speaking on TV because if you don't know the language it can be distracting," she said.

"Obviously, there are captions available on TV's, but I think we can all agree that most of the time the captioning quality during a live event can get jumbled, making it difficult to read in general, and it makes for a disadvantage to a significant number of Houstonians who need pertinent lifesaving information."

VIDEO [CC] - Deaf News: Chief Justice of the United States welcomes Deaf Lawyers into Supreme Court Bar.

WASHINGTON DC -- The Wall Street Journal: 12 Deaf and Hard of Hearing attorneys just made U.S. history. For the first time, Chief Justice John Roberts on Tuesday used a language other than English in the formal ceremony admitting attorneys to the Supreme Court Bar: American Sign Language.

A dozen lawyers from the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Bar Association took the oath of admission promising to conduct themselves “uprightly and according to the law” which the chief justice oversees before an argument session.

After their sponsor, John Stanton, a Justice Department attorney and member of the association, moved their admission, Chief Justice Roberts gave the traditional response in sign language: “Your motion is now granted.” He then repeated the phrase in English.

A Supreme Court spokeswoman, Kathy Arberg, said the chief justice learned to sign the phrase specifically for Tuesday’s ceremony.

“We are truly honored to be admitted to the Supreme Court Bar,” the association’s president, Anat Maytal, a litigation associate at Baker Hostetler, said in a statement. “Our admission sets a precedent that will hopefully encourage others with disabilities to pursue a legal career and view the legal profession as being open to diverse backgrounds.” SOURCE

Deaf News: American Sign Language Version - Open letter to the AG Bell Association from NTID/RIT facutlty and staff.

ROCHESTER, NY -- National Technical Institute for the Deaf and Rochester Institute of Technology facutlty and staff share the American Sign Language video letter to the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (AG Bell) - Recently, there is an appalling wave of reaction by the Deaf community in regards to AG Bell's response to Washington Post's "The Reliable Source" who accuses Nyle DiMarco dispelling the myths about deafness.

To the President, CEO, Board, and Members of the AG Bell Association,

We have a wealth of knowledge today from both historical scholarship and the collective, lived experiences of Deaf people about AG Bell. We know that AG Bell was a strong supporter of the eugenics movement. He supported language oppression, leading to a legacy of linguicism in Deaf history. Eugenics began and was practiced here in the United States before being adopted in Nazi Germany. Thus, Bell was part of the development of the notion of a “better stock of human beings” which clearly indicated that Deaf people were unacceptable. Bell’s ideology shows repeated pattern of language oppression, systematic destruction of Deaf people’s culture and way of life. Such systematic ways of destroying any culture needs to be stopped right now.

The World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) organization has reported that 70 million Deaf and Deaf Blind people around the globe use sign language. Additionally, WFD has worked closely with the United Nations in developing the Convention of Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). The UNCRPD focuses on the rights of Deaf people including recognition of the human right to sign language as a first language. The CRPD, therefore, recognizes and promotes the sign languages of Deaf people worldwide. A related CRPD principle reaffirms the education of Deaf children through sign language followed by reading and writing skills in the language of their home countries. The recent letter from the AG Bell Association mentions sign language as simply one of many “options.” Thus, the AG Bell Association has blatantly denied Deaf children the human right to sign language that has been asserted by WFD/UN CRPD.

I’ve noticed among Deaf students here at NTID that they tend to communicate most successfully through sign. These students are diverse: many from international countries and from various states; their educational backgrounds include experiencing mainstream schools and Deaf schools. When they all come together and need to communicate effectively in the moment, they all use sign. Speech doesn’t work well because many of the international students do not lipread English nor use spoken English. When they come together, they all can sign and smoothly collaborate. This experience is evidence that it is signing which allows diverse students to be successful communicators.

For many years, AG Bell has reinforced the concept that speech is equated with the ability to learn language which is misleading and erroneous. Focusing on developing literacy is different from speech training. Being able to use speech may be a convenient way to communicate with many people, but it does not lead to literacy--that is, skills such as the ability to think, reason, negotiate, read and write. Research has indicated that in America today there are about 30 million people who use speech fluently, but who cannot read and write. When you give your child language, you need to remember that Deaf children always are bilingual or multilingual. Today in 2016, we have a lot of research that AG Bell’s assumptions have been wrong.

In 2008, the President and CEO of AG Bell Association wrote a letter to the Pepsi Company chastising them for having shown a commercial which included Deaf people signing. It was just one short commercial shown on one day out of a whole year’s worth of commercials. Yet, the President and CEO of AG Bell were so upset that they felt they needed to respond. At NTID/RIT, the students, faculty, staff, community members and members of the Orange and Brown Coalition decided that we must confront you about this injustice. We demanded that you rescind your letter to the Pepsi Company and apologize for offending and misrepresenting Deaf people. At the same time, people at NTID/RIT began to question the integrity of having a building named in honor of AG Bell on our campus. Students began to study Bell’s history and notice his pattern of oppressing Deaf people’s language and culture as well as his destructive impact on the individual lives of Deaf people. Because of this history, they felt NTID/RIT should not show honor much less tolerance for people who represent such actions. After much discussion, the name and plaque honoring AG Bell was finally removed from our campus. That was in 2008.

Now, in 2016, you have again written a letter publically insulting Deaf people, Deaf culture, and ASL. You seem resistant to learning. Your pattern of harassment and insults to our culture and our language is unacceptable and must stop. It is harmful to parents, children, and adults. We have had enough.

VIDEO [CC] - Deaf News: Deaf woman takes a splash at Sacramento's Dive Bar in the state capital of California.

SACRAMENTO, CA -- ABC10: Downtown Sacramento's Dive Bar is not your typical dive, at their location on K Street, across from the Crest Theatre, people stop by for more than just the drinks, but the experience.

Once you go inside, it's hard to miss the 8,000-gallon water tank above the bar. It's there where patrons get to see the mermaids take a splash.

"You always know when the mermaids are in the tank because when you look around, everyone is holding their cell phones up." Dive Bar General Manager John Deema said. "You don't even have to see the mermaid to know when the mermaids are in the tank."

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

But Wednesday night was a bit different. The phones were up, video rolling and pictures snapping to capture one mermaid in particular, Brenna DeBartolo.

DeBartolo is Deaf, but that didn't stop her from entering the bar's "Mermaid for a Night" contest. She first went to the Dive Bar for a sales retreat, and fell in love with the atmosphere, and the mermaids.

"It's a different world," she said. "I can imagine myself offering my energy and the magic of the Deaf community in the same place."

With support from the Deaf community, and Brenna's drive, she beat out 10 other candidates. It's something that stood out to Dive Bar's head mermaid, Rachel Smith.

"The amount of time she actually spent in the bar actually talking to people and gaining their support and gaining their votes," Smith said. "She's really personable, she's really friendly, and she worked really, really hard to get in the tank."

DeBartolo trained for nearly a month, getting some practice in with the other mermaids.

She says she didn't have any butterflies, and that it helps that she can't see very well when inside the tank.

Her two performances were a success and as she took pictures with fans, she said the experience was overwhelming.

"I understand sometimes how celebrities might feel out there, that you're smiling so much that your face gets sore," DeBartolo said. "I'm very happy to see that people are excited for me."

Deaf News: Deaf cosmetologist student teaching lessons on accessibility at the Colorado community college.

CORTEZ, CO -- Scottsbluff Star Herald: Going back to school as a single parent with two kids is challenging for many.

For Amanda Schuster getting certified as a cosmetologist has had an additional layer of complexity because she is completely Deaf.

To get the most from her classes, she taught her instructor and others at the Southwest Colorado Community College how to accommodate her, helping to pave the way for other students that might follow her.

"I've never allowed my deafness to stop me," she said, through her interpreter Dawn Kern-Anderson.

Styling hair has always been one of Schuster's passions, but when she decided to go back to school to get certified it required some coordination with the college.

The college didn't have an interpreter on staff, so she got in touch with Kern-Anderson, her interpreter from high school to translate her classes. It's a service that the college pays for.

While Schuster can read lips, Kern-Anderson makes it much easier for her to keep up with her peers.

"It makes me feel like a normal person in the classroom," she said.

Schuster is Brenda Knapp's first Deaf student and the experience has taught her to slow down and avoid tangents in her lectures that might be hard to translate.

"You have to be very structured," Knapp said.

While Schuster appreciates help from Kern-Anderson, she has been in the hearing world her whole life and she doesn't need an interpreter all the time.

Her parents always pushed her to communicate in both English and American Sign Language after she lost her hearing at 14 months to spinal meningitis.

She attended Project Talk in California, which specializes in helping Deaf children learn to talk, and speech therapy through the San Juan Board of Cooperative Educational Services.

Growing up she also excelled in sports including tennis, cheer leading, volleyball and sharp-shooting. After high school, she attended two years college in California and majored in photography.

"I never let anything stop me, although people do try," she said.

Her long-term goal after she finishes classes in cosmetology and aesthetics is to open a salon and photography business.

But before she can take her state test to get certified, she has to complete 1,800 hours in class.

During all her time in school, she has noticed several ways the school can be more accessible and safe for Deaf students.

For example, after the school held an assembly on school safety following a college shooting in Oregon, she suggested the school install TVs and more lights as part of the alarm system. These could help make Deaf students aware of an emergency.

In addition, none of the other students are able to bring their phones into class. But Schuster can't be reached through a regular telephone during personal emergencies, so Knapp made an exception for her.

But rather than being given special treatment, Schuster would be prefer the school have video phones available so she could communicate not only with her family, but with school administrators on different campuses.

"I'm trying to improve the systems, not just for me but for everyone," she said.

Deaf News: HIV is a gay disease... like it or not... Queer people not happy with campaign ad in California.

LOS ANGELES -- Daily Kos: At least it is according to a controversial new ad campaign being deployed around Los Angeles on billboards and in print. And who is doing this? Not some radical conservative group, but the Gay & Lesbian Center of Los Angeles.

In this day and age, when you would think that we have come so far in the struggle to get middle America to embrace the fact that this is not a disease with an orientation, this comes along and is making waves even in conservative circles and feeding the fodder.

Response in the LGBT community has been strong, and according to many of the postings on the discussion board at the Own It. End It. website, not everyone is happy with it.

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a Gay Disease? Are you kidding? For those of us living with the shame and fear of being HIV positive, I'm angry. For those who've lived long enough to see the world begin to accept HIV as more then a gay disease, I'm offended. For those who expect more from our gay organizations, I'm disappointed. Most people will only read your flashy tag line and that's what they'll promote. This world is filled with misinformation, due to our short attention spans. Most people get there information from bits and pieces propagated by the evening news or a flashy headline. I expected more from your center. While the details of your ad are most likely accurate, you've done an injustice to your community. You've flown off course and I'm saddened by your decision to promote this hateful headline.

The Los Angeles Times article regarding the controversial campaign was quick to point out that the billboards will not use the "HIV is a Gay Disease" tag, but instead will simply say "Own It. End It." I frankly don't think that this distinction makes it OK. Own what? This has generated enough attention in L.A., at this point, that the casual observer know exactly what the billboards are asking gay men to do. Take ownership of a disease they didn't create. How can you ask us as a community to own something that has affected millions globally? And to a much greater degree worldwide the heterosexual populaion? It boggles the mind...

Personally, I'm not comfortable with this at all. Gay men have fought this stigma from the very beginning of this disease. To have it come full circle in an shock tactic campaign, even in the interest of public awareness, is not cool. And before anyone says, "Look, it says clearly in the ad that they don't believe that it is a disease with an `orientation'" let me tell you something:

I have taken enough marketing classes and seminars to understand that the initial impact of the bolded taglines is whatthe average driver on the streets of L.A. will remember, or the average reader skimming a magazine will read. This does a disservice to the disease, and to those stigmatized by employers, insurance companies, familes, and the public at large.

"Well, Will was teaching me, and it's really nice to talk to other Deaf people here. That's really the best part," said one of the campers.

Officer coordinator and instructor Cara Frank knows how important this camp is first0hand. She was born Deaf.

"It really has a special place in my heart," she said. "Just having another role model that you can relate to growing up, it's really key. And that's what this camp is about."

Everyone we talked to said they will absolutely be back next year.

VIDEO [CC] - Deaf News: RIT on TV - New classroom technology helps Deaf and Hard of Hearing RIT students.

ROCHESTER, NY -- WHEC-TV: New technology is being used at Rochester Institute of Technology to help students learn and communicate in and out of the classroom.

The new technologies include voice recognition apps, video remote-interpreting and captioning services, just to name a few. This is technology that students say is changing the way they're communicating both in an out of class.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

The ability to fully hear is something some of these RIT students do not have, but the ability to communicate is something they do, and it just got a whole lot easier.

“The world is becoming more accessible to Deaf people,” says Rico Petersen, Assistant Dean and Director of the Department of Access Services. “Typically they might not know sign language, or they might prefer English instead of sign language, so we have a provider that is trained in specialized software. They go into class and type live what is being said.”

It starts with captioning services for entire classrooms - lectures scrolling on a screen in front of the students in real time. The technology can even be brought out of the classrooms and into the lives of the students at home, or with friends thanks to the Ava app, making group face-to-face conversations that much easier. People looking to download the AVA app can email Hello@ava.me and ask how to sign up or get more info.

Even for those one-on-one studying sessions, new video remote interpreting, or VRIS used.

“It's much easier and more clear using your expression and so forth rather than writing back and forth,” says Bryan ward, RIT gradute.

With 130 interpreters on staff and more than 4,000 hours of interpreting done a week at RIT, this new technology is needed. “It really is having an impact on the Deaf world because it makes access easier to come by,” says Peterson.

The entire Deaf community has access to this new technology. Professors say there are still some situations where interpreters work best, but the new technology is simply a way to make every-day actions easier. Source
VIDEO [CC] Deaf News: Lead found in water at Michigan School for the Deaf.

FLINT, MI –- A building on the campus of the Michigan School for the Deaf has tested positive for the first time for lead in the water, according to a letter issued by the school Wednesday, Jan. 20 to parents and guardians.

"Yesterday (1/19/16), we received the first lead positive water test for the Stevens Hall dormitory (the school building continues to show no lead detected)," reads the letter from Michigan School for the Deaf principal Cecelia Winkler and administrative manager Mark Bouvy.

The school has been purchasing bottled water since September 2015 and had no positive tests for lead prior to the recent result, according to the letter.

The water crisis in Flint, Michigan has been going on for almost two years. A national disaster has been declared, but we look back at what caused the problem, what has been done to fix it, and what is expected next.

Winkler said the information in the letter was true when reached by phone Wednesday evening, but she forwarded all other comment to a spokesman for the Michigan Department of Education.

A call and email to the Michigan Department of Education spokesman were not immediately returned Wednesday evening.

It's unclear in the letter what the positive test showed in terms of the amount of lead found in the water or how frequently tests had taken place prior to the positive result.

The letter further states "Our research shows that lead is not absorbed thru the skin but ingested," with the school exploring the option of filtering water for showers in the dormitory.

Students will have the option for the time being to shower in the school locker room, which the letter states is "presumed lead-free pending further testing."

All faucets in Stevens Hall will be replaced in the next two weeks, with the letter stating "A lot of lead in the city water has been deemed to be coming from the sink faucets installed before the 1990's and copper piping soldered with lead solder." Read The Full Article.

UPDATE:

Faucets replaced at Michigan School for the Deaf after positive lead test. All faucets at the Michigan School for the Deaf were replaced over the weekend after a test showed positive for lead at the campus' Stevens Hall dormitory building.

Martin Ackley, spokesman for the Michigan Department of Education, said independent testing showed a level of .028 parts per billion -- well below the 15 ppb allowable under federal guidelines -- at the dorm that houses 75 of the 167 students that live on campus full-time.

"This is a very important issue and the school wanted to make sure the parents knew about the testing," he said, after a letter was issued to parents and guardians about the positive test. "They wanted to inform the parents of that and that remediation was taking place immediately."

Crews were in the school over the weekend to replace all 62 faucets in the dorm, a building that was constructed in the late 1940s, Ackley said. Students have received bottled drinking water at the school since September 2015 as a precautionary measure.

Ackley said the school had been on a waiting list to get the building tested by the state Department of Environmental Quality in mid-December, but the landlord and school administration decided to speed up the process. Read The Full Article
