VIDEO: [ASL] - Believe it or not...

There are over 70 million Deaf people in the world. Many of them are either Deaf from birth or became Deaf before learning the spoken language.

This fact has serious implications for the education of Deaf people. To be Deaf means to not hear or comprehend speech and language through the ear.

Communication for a person who cannot hear is visual, not auditory. To deny sign language to Deaf people is tantamount to denying them their basic human rights to communication and education.

Video Description/ English Summary: The video has two points, (1) that the World Federation of the Deaf estimates that 80% of Deaf people do not receive any education at all. (2) How does this make you feel? Isn't this a shocking, disgusting, and infuriating statistic? So what do you plan to do about it?

1 - "80% of Deaf people do not receive any education at all." If you have your Paddy Ladd's "Understanding Deaf Culture: In Search of Deafhood" near you, grab it and flip to page 44. Alternatively, at the end of this very paragraph there's a link that will take you to the WFD article that the citation in the book is from: http://wfdeaf.org/databank/policies/policy-visions-and-goals-for-access-to-adult-education-for-deaf-people

Signed Version - How Many Senses Do Deaf People Have ?

The number doesn't actually matter. What's cool to realize is that it's way more than we previously thought. What's important is that the level, sensitivity, and use that HUMANS get out of a sense isn't uniform across the board. No matter how we may appear to fit the current social construct of 'normal.'

Why does this happen? Because of biodiversity. And the concept of biodiversity is important why?

Many reasons. Here's a big one:

Because the social model of disability has told us for years, that, "while physical, sensory, intellectual, or psychological variations may cause individual functional limitation or impairments, these do not have to lead to a disability unless society fails to take account of and include people regardless of their individual differences."

With so much diversity of ability happening in every single person on the planet, it's amazing that a large majority have banded together to consider themselves "normal" (read: everybody is the exact same) while others are not. "The difference between the needs that many disabled people have and the needs of people who are not labelled as disabled is that non-disabled people have had their dependencies normalized. The world has been built to accommodate certain needs and call the people who need those things independent, while other needs are considered exception." (AJ Withers, "Disability Politics and Theory")

When we realize that we all have different abilities, and consequently, different needs, dependencies that are very real, even though they have been largely 'normalized.' Maybe this helps us see ourselves in others with a little bit more empathy, maybe we find a bit more compassion from within, maybe we recognize our humanity a bit more markedly, and maybe, we can build a more inclusive future. - ewitty
VIDEO [CC] Deaf Seahawks inspires young Deaf twins.

FLANDERS, N.J. - Nine-year-old twins Riley and Erin Kovalcik were born with a genetic condition that left them partially Deaf. Last week, they saw a TV commercial featuring the Seattle Seahawks’ Derrick Coleman.

"I thought it was very touching because I didn’t think there was any athlete that actually could play that could be exactly hearing impaired like me and Erin," Riley says. "Like, I mean, seriously!"

"I saw the Duracell battery commercial. I remembered him saying he was bullied, and I was like, 'What? How is he a football player? I mean, he's really strong, but how does he let them bully him?'" Erin says.

Riley herself was picked on in school and was told not to play sports - a warning she ignored. After the Seahawks won last weekend, Riley picked up a pencil.

"Dear my inspiration Derrick Coleman," she says, reading her letter. "I know how you feel. I also have hearing aids. Just try your best. I have faith in you."

Their father Jake tweeted a picture of the letter, hoping Coleman would see it.

"I just wanted him to know how much he's doing for Deaf kids and little kids and all kids with disabilities," Jake says. "It doesn’t matter that you're deaf. It doesn't matter that you may have some other disability. You can be exceptional too."

The Seattle Seahawks' Derrick Coleman makes fans' dream come true with tickets to the Super Bowl.

That night, the Seahawks re-tweeted the letter. It's been shared and re-tweeted 2,700 times. ... Read more: http://www.cbsnews.com/news/deaf-seahawks-player-derrick-coleman-inspires-young-hearing-impaired-fans/

RAW VIDEO: Cop kicks legally Deaf man in the face during arrest in Canada.

COLD LAKE, AB. - A YouTube video of an Alberta RCMP officer kicking Richard Claybert in the face has sparked an investigation and caught the attention of the province.

According to a statement released by RCMP, three officers from the Cold Lake detachment responded to complaints of a noisy party in a parking lot of a community hall early Saturday, Sept. 22.

While responding, one of the party organizers asked for police assistance in clearing the crowd. An intoxicated man refused to leave and two officers began the process of putting the man under arrest while the third officer continued crowd control. According to Metro Edmonton, it was the third time police were called to the hall that night.

RCMP have identified the man being arrested as 21-year-old Richard Claybert.

In the grainy, shaky footage posted to YouTube, Claybert appears face-down on the ground while two officers attempt to handcuff him. Onlookers taunt and yell at the officers and you can hear one man shouting "Seven-11 for the rest of your life, man. Seven-11," although it is not clear whether it is coming from a bystander or an officer... OLATHE, KS - A mandate to cut the budgets for Kansas state agencies could be bad news for a school in Olathe, Kan., that's been helping children since 1861.

Sarah Churman's 'Powered On' details her life's journey and offers unique insights from the perspective of a woman who has experienced both sides of a disability.

ABC News - Sarah Churman, 29, was born with a tiny fraction of her hearing. Last year she had surgery to implant a new device, The Esteem, into each ear. Her mother-in-law cashed in her retirement to part of the $60,000 bill.

Before Sarah and her husband, Sloan, left for the hospital to have the surgery, Churman's mother-in-law made one request of her son: film Churman's reaction to hearing for the first time. The 90-second clip has gone viral, having been viewed more than 14 million times.

“In nature there’s no blemish but the mind, none can be called deformed but unkind” (William Shakespeare in Twelfth Night Act III Scene IV)

Never has God created imperfect people, or what-is-so-called ‘disabled’. People who call them as disabled are the most cruel people. God created people with the highest perfection and having the same right to develop their potentials to gain wealth.

Until these days, the lives of disabled people and deaf people in Indonesia are still marginalized both structurally and culturally. There is injustice to get their rights for education, jobs, health, social, culture, law, access for information, and public facilities use. In other word, there is discrimination toward disabled people in the society. Attitudes towards disability are quite bad in Indonesia, and there is a lingering association of impairment with wrong-doing.

Most people are embarrassed about disability, and deaf children are sometimes hidden away, especially in rural areas. Some of the Deaf people in the organisations we work with say their parents let them come to meetings in the hope that they will ‘become normal’ by forbidding them from using sign language. Faced with negative attitudes like this, Deaf children often grow up to have low self-esteem and little self-confidence.

Too many people are busy with their own importance; trying to get more money, chasing better carriers, and thinking to get higher positions, or even cheating for their own sakes as they have forgotten their surroundings that need their hands.

Through this paper, I would like to invite people to step into the proud of, emergent DEAF-WORLD and learn about its language, values, history, and concerns and to see a ‘real world’ surround us, but might have not been seen or heard by our very own eyes & ears to ‘open’ other people’s eyes to see a deaf community that is considered as a minor-marginal-community in Indonesia as disabled people, while not many people realize that deaf community is not disabled people but they see themselves as ‘language minority group’ who are fighting to get their right of sign language as their first mother tongue language.

Through our presentation, we will guide all of you to have a wonderful journey tour into the deaf world in Indonesia, their deaf culture, sign language, deaf education and their life. We will have it through our interactive workshop, to give you an opportunity to experience a little of what the works is like for a Deaf person.

In everyday like, Deaf people try to overcome barriers to communication in an environment that is designed to meet needs of hearing people. We hope that this workshop will provide a valuable insight into the life of Deaf people.

By attending the workshop, you will gain a better understanding of how to communicate with deaf people (communication strategies), how to be deaf like is, some basic Indonesian sign, how deaf enjoy the music and culture art in theatre. Indonesia News video clip: Deaf Art Community Jogja

VIDEO: NewsX: Ban on bulk SMS hits Deaf people hard the nation of India.

NEW DELHI - The Government of India's blanket ban orders on limiting the number of SMSes may have been rational in terms of its bid to stop miscreants from sending bulk sms that spread panic. But there's a whole new segment that finds the clock stops as soon as the smses stop.

The most inconvenienced by this order are the 1.8 million hearing & speech impaired citizens of the nation. It began as a move to stem the exodus of North Eastern citizens... arising out of rumours being spread by certain vested interest groups.

The government in an effort to stop these messages initiated a ban on more than 5 sms from any pre-paid number for 15 days. Amidst criticism and growing public outcry the govt increased the limit to 20 sms a day. A Deaf person would require to send anywhere between 100 to 250 sms' per day to carry on with their basic activities... Read more: http://www.newsx.com/videos/ban-bulk-sms-hits-speech-impaired-hard?

The scene "The Cochlea Implantation" (performed by the Deaf actors Horst Dittrich as the father and Reinhard Grobbauer as the son and Werner Mössler as the doctor" shows a cochlea implantation real ironically. It is a real question, the cochlea implantation could be helpful.

On the way of an operation the return to the "hearing world" is technically possible. But the way of operation is not helpful for the Deaf society.

What happens to operated Deaf people, which are living now with a cochlea implantation but without a better result of hearing? They are not integrated in the "hearing world" and the Deaf world, they damaged psychological and physical. In such a situation the cochlea implantation destroys Deaf society.

VIDEO [ASL] - A documentary about dropout rate among mainstream Deaf and Hard of Hearing students.

Students with hearing loss attending general education classrooms have been reported to experience difficulties in social skills and relationships. This 5-year longitudinal study examined the social skills and problem behaviors of students who were Deaf or Hard of Hearing, and who attended general education classrooms. Data were obtained from classroom teachers and students themselves.

The mean Social Skills and Problem Behavior scores (Social Skills Rating Scales; Gresham & Elliott, 1990) were within the average range and normally distributed each year. The average change over 5 years in social skills and problem behavior was not significant.

The most consistent predictors of social outcomes were the students" classroom communication participation and participation in extracurricular activities. Implications for placement, intervention, and further research are discussed. Sources: http://www.freepatentsonline.com/article/Exceptional-Children/260582218.html

VIDEO [CC] - "Hears" for the first time video is fake ? Report.

If you have access to the internet, or live within shouting distance of someone who does, then few past weeks ago, you probably watched the wildly popular the videos of "Hears For The First Time" in these days, Deaf people who, after receiving cochlear/hearing implantations, was able to hear for the first time.

Some people humbly suggest that the debate over real or fake is completely meaningless anyway, since the purpose is just to get people talking about the company or the product in fact, the people who are crying "fake," while trying to damage the video's reputation, are actually only helping the brand succeed in generating buzz. It's a textbook example of the "the "Streisand Effect."

"Entertainment and sharing are the only goals with online video ads" Viewers get so caught up in the debate over real or fake, but you know who doesn't? The brand. Do you think the brand cares whether you came to the video with a bias thinking it was fake? Because they don't. What they care about is that you A) watched it, and B) forwarded it to someone. You could have forwarded it because you believed it was a real. Or you could have sent it to friends because you're convinced it's an obvious fake and you want their support. Either way... the video is shared like crazy.

It's also incredibly difficult to "prove" these things one way or another, which will allow the conspiracy theory to live on almost indefinitely. So if they're smart, The community isn't getting caught up in trying to prove their video is real, but are merely basking in the glow of the tech journalism's spotlight. Meanwhile, international media news are the propaganda of HUGE lies!!!, but the audience will no longer believe it's real.

One frequently cited piece of evidence supporting the hoax claim is that they speaks pretty clearly which, according to Yes, they "hear" now, but they're still not "Hearing"! with captioned, It is impossible for someone who is actually Deaf. This evaluation is usually backed up with an explanation like, "My nephew went to summer camp with a guy who said his neighbor's aunt was completely Deaf, and she couldn't talk that well, so this must be a fake."

However, the first sentence of that article proves the point. They were not DEAF. They had severe "Hearing Loss." It is amazing what they did but it should not be title "DEAF" they "HEARS" for the first time. They has been heard themselves before, just not clearly. Thier voice sounded too "Hearing-Like" and could be heard clearly raising questions if her hearing loss is really severe, maybe there's a line drawn between using the term 'Deaf', because there are 'Legally Blind' people that can still see. Maybe there is 'Legally Deaf'.

These people clearly do not understand that proper speech requires hearing in order for the speaker to properly modulate their voice. For the same reason that people listening to loud music on headphones may either shout or speak too quietly, Deaf people typically have a difficult time vocalizing normally. One of the reasons that they are able to vocalize in the manner that they do is because their brain is using the vibration caused by their vocal chords to help modulate. Spoken word recognition in toddlers who use cochlear implants: http://jslhr.asha.org/cgi/content/abstract/52/6/1390

Again, Entertainment and sharing are the only goals with online video ads have been quite a few detractors on the internet stating that seems to indicate these videos may be a fake/hoax..., because they are able to speak almost immediately after it is turned on. The video takes place in a doctor's office and shows the adult/children's reaction at the precise moment a lab technician turns on the implant device. Some people viewed the video at least a half-dozen times, and they can unequivocally state that it is the most inspiring the video you will ever see that consists almost entirely of thier crying or exciting (Presumably, they are crying because of the emotion of the moment, and not because the technician decided that thier first audible sound should be a recording, perhaps. The stories run by the media is grossly distorted or simply fake (to sell the product?) it is possbile to convince people to buy the product by the cochlear implant companies from the media network.

The media network is interesting the video which on purpose is only for the money as the dirty business? as seen on Cochlear Business Is Dirty Business! with captioned. The video is only for the money as the dirty business that what the media seeking partnership agreement contract to share profit from the cochlear implant companies? The whole thing was acted out in order to help promote the implantable hearing aid. You can see the fact checks and weblinks as following: An organic cure for deafness: http://www.deafhoodfoundation.org/  Deaf Bilingual Coaltion: http://www.dbcusa.org/

VIDEO [CC] - Deaf girl, Aiss' story-telling video "If You Really Knew Me" the life struggle in the mainstream school.

She tells a story, her speaking, her heart, poured out. If you are Deaf, hearing impaired, or just don't understand, here is what she said...

Transcription: Aiss was born with a hearing impairment. She was Deaf completly till the age of 6 because her parents got the hearing devices. But since she first stepped in elementary school, there was never a day someone would push her down, call her names, not talk to her, and mostly, never a day that her own school teacher would respect her.

In the mainstream school, Aiss was stupid, and was dumb. She would get best up at school because when She say "what, I can't hear you.." they would take that as sarcasm. She got referrals, suspensions, and got kicked out of school for things she haven't done. She was accused of "smoking in the bathroom" in my 4th grade year. She was "accused of beating up 3 girls in the back of school" when She didn't even know how to fight, and in field trips the principal was always picking her up and taking her to detention because she would get into fights, but they would pick up the ones who fought with her.

She was always in trouble for standing for herself. The school principal abused her, and even had her hold back a year in school for no reason whatsoever, almost fired her mom from her job and she left her last day of school with a concussion and four stab wounds on her back from those tacks that pin papers with on the wall because of this girl that would always fight with her. She only had her friend in those years. but she was worse than her, she commit suicide at the age of thirteen she was eleven, She call the cops on it cause, had to watch her die.

The sad thing is she couldn't even attend the funeral, the parents had her buried in Arizona. She became suicidal, cut, drank smoked, but she joined martial arts later. and she is still in martial arts now to this day.

In 6th grade, she started having friends. People knew not to mess with her cause all this made stronger. and she always had to get in a fight. But she was so happy when she didn't lose her first real fight that gained the full respect.

She was wondered though, why people are so cruel still. Especially when someone has a disability they have to live with there whole life, and they laugh about it. Actions may be stronger than words, but no one said words didn't hurt as well. She is still hurt though. because its been since 6th grade that no ones bothered her until like two weeks ago, she cried her eyes out and just broke down, because this girl in her class would say "I m surprised you can hear the school bell." with a smirk.

If only she could put all those people in her shoes, and show them what its like to be like this, alone, rejected, hurt to judge what you don't understand. This is why she decide to give hugs. because in those times, nobody was there to give the one. No one deserves to live her life, a life without anyone beside them. She Love you guys and promise.

If you lived with a disability, a bad habit, a different sexual orientation, or an impairment, and you blame it for all your problems, and what you've been through in your past, DON'T. Thank god for it. why?

It makes you stronger than anyone else that consider thereselves "normal", and you being the "Abnormal, weird, strange" person. It makes you more confident than others, and more tougher through out life. Don't reflect the pain you went through on others, turn that pain into something greater, and give something to others, that you never had before like friendship, love, HUGS kisses. Trust her, you will feel so much better.
