VIDEO: Deaf News - Marlee Matlin was chosen to sign the national anthem at Super Bowl 50 for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community.
SANTA CLARA, CA -- Academy Award-winning actress Marlee Matlin joined Lady Gaga to perform the anthem in American Sign Language at Super Bowl 50 on February 7, 2016, at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California, USA.
Marked the third time actress Marlee Matlin performed the anthem in American sign language, having also done so before Super Bowl XVII alongside Garth Brooks and again before Super Bowl XLI alongside Billy Joel.
While Lady Gaga sang the national anthem Sunday night just prior to kickoff for Super Bowl 50, actress and activist Marlee Matlin signed the National Anthem for the crowd. But, strangely enough, she was barely shown by cameras. This is the second time that Matlin signed for the Super Bowl, which is super cool, but it just would've been nice to see more of her. Because she was, you know, signing for Deaf and Hard of Hearing people unable to hear the anthem.
Matlin appeared in the TV series ‘Switched at Birth’, but she is also well known for her role in The L Word. Matlin lost most of her hearing when she was 18 months old, according to IMDb. Matlin participates in a number of volunteer and service activities, but, most notably, she was instrumental in passing legislation that requires all televisions made in the U.S. to be equipped with Closed Caption technology for Deaf people, according to Look to the Stars.
Matlin also signed the "Star Spangled Banner" before Super Bowl XLI in Miami, which was between the Indianapolis Colts and Chicago Bears, according to Hollywood Life. Often, at major sporting events, the person signing the national anthem will be shown in the corner of the screen, so that those with hearing loss can follow along easily. But that didn't happen during Super Bowl 50, and many Twitter users thought that briefly flashing Matlin while she signed was an empty gesture to include the hearing-impaired on behalf of CBS. Source

VIDEO: [CC] - Full documentary in the role model of female bodybuilders, Shelley Beattie, ‘Deaf Woman BodyBuilder’
Deaf Mosaic exclusive interview covers on the star of American Gladiator Siren, Shelley Beattie, a professional female bodybuilder and actress.
At the peak of her competitive career as a professional bodybuilder, Beattie reached the top three at the Ms. International and Ms. Olympia contests, the two most prestigious shows for female professional bodybuilders.
She was one of the few Deaf professional female bodybuilders in the world, making the cover of DeafLife magazine twice in the 1990s. After her retirement she joined the Grinder on America3's America's Cup team and managed to reach second place in both 1994 and 1995.
Shelley Ann Beattie was born in Orange County, California. At the age of three, Beattie suffered hearing loss from an aspirin overdose. Her peers' misunderstandings and lack of education about people who are Deaf led to trouble socializing. Since she could only understand her classmates if they were facing her, her classmates assumed she was mentally disadvantaged and rejected her. Beattie became a loner and used sports to deal with her frustrations and lack of social life. She also learned sign language and had several operations and speech therapy to improve her ability to communicate... Read more: Shelley Beattie Biography

Final revision of ASL translation on September 21, 2012. It was June 2012 when Wayne Betts gave one small suggestion in adding something to ASL. He signed SI5S. I expanded on that idea and made this version into the translation that I am fully content and will stick to this.
Here is my ASL translation of ASL is a GIFT in American Sign Language. Happy Autumn!

Deaf News: The show will be one of the first of its kind designed specifically for Deaf audiences in the United States.
NEW YORK CITY -- Westchester Newsday - Croton woman hosts talk show for the Deaf - Television is a visual medium, but most talk shows just aren’t the same on mute. One Croton-on-Hudson woman is turning the traditional interview format on its head by telling her guests to talk with their hands.
Independent producer Aidan Mack has teamed up with White Plains Community Media (WPCM) to produce “The Aidan Mack Show,” in which Mack interviews guests exclusively in American Sign Language. The show will be one of the first of its kind designed specifically for Deaf audiences.
“I realized that I wanted to reach a larger audience, the hearing community, and work with them to become more comfortable interacting with Deaf people, regardless of language differences,” she said. “At the same time, I also want to dispel the misconceptions and myths about Deaf people, and show that Deaf people do live normal lives like everyone else.” ... VIDEO: Marlee Matlin tweets concerns about a possible stem cell cure for deafness.
LONDON - British researchers have been able to rebuild nerves in the ears of gerbils, and it is believed the same technique could one day be applicable to Deaf humans. However, Oscar-winning actress Matlin, who has been Deaf since she was 18 months old, is worried about the implications of the development. Matlin has been tweeting her mixed feelings about the recently announced “stem cell cure” for deafness.
Matlin commented that millions of Deaf Americans who communicate in sign language do not regard deafness as a "handicap" or a "'disease' to cure." She posted these comments on Twitter: “Imagine how I must feel with my children with me at the grocery store and someone says "I heard there's a cure for your deafness!" Think.”
"Deafness cure" is trending. My concern is that it's bigger than a "trend." It involves people and not as simple as the 4 letters in "cure." According to The Telegraph, some Deaf people feel that they don’t need to be fixed by medical intervention. The National Association of the Deaf says that many profoundly Deaf people who sign consider themselves to be part of a unique linguistic group through sign language and a unique Deaf culture.
