Deaf News: Deaf lesbian couple who were attacked with a bat: 'We're sacred to walk the streets' in California.

DESERT HOT SPRINGS, CA. -- San Diego Gay & Lesbian News: The Deaf lesbian couple who were beaten with a baseball bat in Desert Hot Springs on March 22, have come forward to SDGLN to voice concerns about their safety and to thank the community for their support.

Deanna (Dee), 37, and Cathren (Cat), 30, are recovering from injuries they received on Tuesday when suspect Shaunda Lane allegedly became upset because she didn’t understand the women’s sign language.

Dee and Cat used hand signing to ask Lane to leave their property, but were attacked by Lane with a baseball bat according to a police report.

Lane is currently behind bars facing attempted murder charges. Local police say they are not investigating the case as a hate crime.

Since the attack the women have been trying to get their lives back in order and the community has rallied together to help them. A Go Fund Me account has been set up to help the couple recover financially.

“I really would like to thank the supporters who are my family and Deaf friends, even Deaf teachers, even hearing friends, also hearing families…who already knew who we are, for rest of our lives,” said Dee in the letter to SDGLN.

Both Dee and Cat suffered severe injuries; Dee a broken hand and concussion.

A Good Samaritan who only wishes to be identified as Team Mom has stepped in to help the couple as they recover from shock.

Dee is grateful to Team Mom and her continued support, “Team Mom (has) been checking on us almost every day to see if we (are) doing ok, and bring everything that we need. We love her so much. We thank…GOD every day for her,” wrote Cat.

After the attack, the couple’s apartment was broken into and their cellphones and other items were stolen or vandalized. Dee expressed some of the things that the donations will go toward. She says they are very scared of living in Desert Hot Springs now and they need money to move.

Additionally they need help with, “medical bills which my Medi-Care isn't good; have to transfer from Indiana to…California. Transportations; with no car which during night time is not safe to walk and things were missing at home when it was robbed.”

Team Mom opened up her apartment to the couple after their attack and Dee is very grateful for her kindness.

“Team Mom has made sure that we have food, clothes money etc... we love that there are people like her in the world,” she writes. “Team Mom lives in a small apartment and still took us in for our safety. She does so much to have so little. Thanks Team Mom for accepting us for who we are. I'm honored to have my Team Mom. Many thanks.”

Team Mom is asking for help within the Deaf and LGBT communities to aid these women in getting their lives back in order.

“My city has two Deaf females that were beaten within inches of their life with a baseball bat and robbed,” Team Mom writes to SDGLN. “They don't have anything now! Can you help make them feel beautiful again? Contact the community and a few others you may know. To help support the deaf victims to get back on their feet.”

Dee says they are still anxious about their assailant, and worry about her getting released from jail.

"We are still not feeling safe completely because we heard Shaunda (Lane) is trying to act like she is not guilty for attempted murder," she writes. "Need (to) talk to detective this Monday to make sure she stays in prison with no bail."

VIDEO [CC] - #whyIsign Kickstarter fundraiser introduction by Brandon Kazen-Maddox.

SAN FRANCISCO -- The focus of this video is a #whyIsign Kickstarter fundraiser. This Kickstarter's goal is to create a brand-new ASL music video in collaboration with 13 Deaf, Hard-of-Hearing, CODA and GODA artists.

The Kickstarter is set at $10,000 and 80% of the money raised will go directly back to the Deaf community to support Deaf-owned and operated businesses in the Bay Area. The remaining 20% will go towards the production of the ASL music video and to pay the Deaf artists for their work in this project.

We will launch the Kickstarter at the beginning of April and it will last for one month! The link will be posted here once the fundraiser is live.

Please share this video with as many individuals, groups, and organizations as you can so we can contribute to De'Via art and our Deaf community! Thank you!

According to a campaign website: Despite major advances in civil and political rights, our country still has a long way to go in addressing the issue of gender inequality. Many of the achievements that have been made for women’s rights in the 20th century have been under attack by the Republican party - denying women control over their own bodies, preventing access to vital medical and social services, and blocking equal pay for equal work Fighting for Women’s Rights.

Bernard "Bernie" Sanders is an American politician and the junior United States Senator from Vermont. He is a candidate for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States in the 2016 election.

Deaf News: HIV is a gay disease... like it or not... Queer people not happy with campaign ad in California.

LOS ANGELES -- Daily Kos: At least it is according to a controversial new ad campaign being deployed around Los Angeles on billboards and in print. And who is doing this? Not some radical conservative group, but the Gay & Lesbian Center of Los Angeles.

In this day and age, when you would think that we have come so far in the struggle to get middle America to embrace the fact that this is not a disease with an orientation, this comes along and is making waves even in conservative circles and feeding the fodder.

Response in the LGBT community has been strong, and according to many of the postings on the discussion board at the Own It. End It. website, not everyone is happy with it.

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a Gay Disease? Are you kidding? For those of us living with the shame and fear of being HIV positive, I'm angry. For those who've lived long enough to see the world begin to accept HIV as more then a gay disease, I'm offended. For those who expect more from our gay organizations, I'm disappointed. Most people will only read your flashy tag line and that's what they'll promote. This world is filled with misinformation, due to our short attention spans. Most people get there information from bits and pieces propagated by the evening news or a flashy headline. I expected more from your center. While the details of your ad are most likely accurate, you've done an injustice to your community. You've flown off course and I'm saddened by your decision to promote this hateful headline.

The Los Angeles Times article regarding the controversial campaign was quick to point out that the billboards will not use the "HIV is a Gay Disease" tag, but instead will simply say "Own It. End It." I frankly don't think that this distinction makes it OK. Own what? This has generated enough attention in L.A., at this point, that the casual observer know exactly what the billboards are asking gay men to do. Take ownership of a disease they didn't create. How can you ask us as a community to own something that has affected millions globally? And to a much greater degree worldwide the heterosexual populaion? It boggles the mind...

Personally, I'm not comfortable with this at all. Gay men have fought this stigma from the very beginning of this disease. To have it come full circle in an shock tactic campaign, even in the interest of public awareness, is not cool. And before anyone says, "Look, it says clearly in the ad that they don't believe that it is a disease with an `orientation'" let me tell you something:

I have taken enough marketing classes and seminars to understand that the initial impact of the bolded taglines is whatthe average driver on the streets of L.A. will remember, or the average reader skimming a magazine will read. This does a disservice to the disease, and to those stigmatized by employers, insurance companies, familes, and the public at large.

VIDEO [CC] - Bad Lip Reading's Ted Cruz ad is a hilarious delight.

The most memorable Ted Cruz ad of 2016 came this week via Bad Lip Reading. And while it’s a complete satire, we feel confident watching it will be the funniest three minutes of your day.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

Cruz barely appeared in Bad Lip Reading’s GOP debate parody, but here we get a pretty nice impression of the candidate delivering the following sage lines:

“Death will find you soon. Not sure you’ll be remembered.”

“You got happy cheer, hrmmmgh!"

“I just love to twerk. Holla holla holla holla holla holla.”

“I need a bogel for the glotch.”

Thank you, Bad Lip Reading. Always.

VIDEO [CC] - This is a GoFundMe campaign to raise $25,000 to light up the Daily Moth and ensure that it has a permanent part in our community.

The Deaf host ASL radio show, Alex Abenchuchan: "The word, "Deaf" is our own brand of human. It's something that identifies and connects all of us. We can and do celebrate our culture and our community every day."

That's why Abenchuchan started the Daily Moth, an online show that delivers news in video using American Sign Language. He cover trending stories and Deaf topics with a twist of humor and Deaf culture in new shows posted Mondays through Thursdays.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

Many look at "deaf" as a medical term, as a kind of disability, or use this word to imply someone is ignoring you or is closed off from the world. This causes the persisting myth that we need to be cured or that sign language is an inferior language. Feel free to donate Daily Moth - Donations Here.

Why does this happen? Because our community is constantly defined by those who aren't a part of the Deaf way of living. We are framed as a helpless group of people that needs help and therapy in order to be successful. And whatever few opportunities come our way, those with privilege take away.

How do we change this? We change this by taking back our own representation, by knowing what's going on in the world, especially events that directly impact our way of living. We change this by being inspired by those who blaze trails and by supporting those who are oppressed. The collective strength of our community is more than enough to blast through any barriers and build new platforms.

I'm asking you to partner with me in this campaign to raise $25,000 to keep the Daily Moth running for another year.

I'm asking every regular viewer of this show to donate whatever you can to light up the Daily Moth and keep the shows coming in 2016!

This figure is based on operating costs and the minimum salary necessary for me to remain independent and committed to bringing daily shows to you. I will pursue advertisements and other revenue opportunities, but I can't start doing that without the foundation of your support. Donations Here

Partner with the Moth today and share this campaign with all of your family and friends. Thank you for all of your support. To donate and for more information, go to https://gofundme.com/dailymoth and http://dailymoth.com. Stay with the light!

VIDEO - Deaf News: Stoke goalkeeper Jack Butland helped send the Great Britain women's Deaf team to the World Cup.

STOKE, UK -- Stoke City star Jack Butland has generously donated £5,000 to Great Britain's women's Deaf football team, as he showed why he's one of the Premier League's nice guys.

An online appeal aiming to raise £10,000 - half the amount the British team need to attend June's Deaf World Cup in Italy - has now reached its target thanks to Butland's donation.

On Thursday morning GB Deaf Football tweeted: 'Wow! Thank you so much @JackButland-One for the £5000 donation. We are in shock! Just £1890 to go.'

Butland, 22, responded: 'I've learnt a lot from major tournaments, experiences I'll never forget, I'd love for you to experience the same!'

Further support for the appeal has come from England internationals Fran Kirby, Jade Moore, Jo Potter and Lucy Bronze, along with Wales midfielder Jess Fishlock.

Butland, who has three England caps, also works as an ambassador for the Kick It Out anti-discrimination campaign.

The 22-year-old has been in sensational form for Stoke City F.C. this season, earning many plaudits and international recognition.

Some are tipping Butland to push Joe Hart for England's No 1 spot ahead of Euro 2016 in France. Source
