Diana Hirwa is Deaf and uses sign language to communicate, and the way the Kenya Television Network has chosen to portray her is quite revealing. Major news outlets from KTN to the media all decided to utilize the outdated terms 'Deaf and Dumb' in their stories about the woman. Dear ignorant media, question: What do you call Deaf people ? RAW VIDEO: Deaf black students say they were manhandled by police.
BELLEVILLE, NJ - The East Coast's Stop and Frisk law allowed New Jersey cops to stop a group of deaf black teenagers and harass them. A group of deaf men, on summer vacation from a Trenton trade school for the hearing-impaired, said they were stopped and manhandled by cops in Belleville, New Jersey Tuesday.
20 year old Isiah Isaac used “sign language” to tell the story to PIX 11 through his mother and brother. “It was six cars that surrounded them,” Isaac’s mother, Frances, said—as she followed his sign language in the family living room. “He said all the cop cars came over and blocked them in.”
17 year old Domonique Isaac - Isiah’s brother - said he was the only one of six, young men in the car who could hear. The driver, he said, was Deaf - and got out of the car to fetch his l icense from a bag in the trunk. Isaac said, “The passenger (in the front) tried to get out and explain to the officer that he’s Deaf.
The driver ended up on the other side of the car and they slammed him in the passenger’s seat. When he slammed him in, that’s when I tried telling him, ‘He’s Deaf, he’s DEAF.’” ... ASL Version - Stereotype Examples: Deaf Trash, Deafhood, Beasthood, Orange Group, Blue Group, Etc!
Vlog In American Sign Language (ASL), I wanted to share my own opinion and based on my observation of the recent chaotic situation in the Deaf video web. I wanted to quote the description of a stereotype.
It is a public belief about a certain social group or a type of individual. Stereotype is always based on any prior assumption by the certain groups or individuals.
Stereotypes are often created about people of specific cultures or races. So any time if you are grouping races or individuals together. You tend to make a judgment about them without knowing them.
This is a classical example of a stereotype. Racial remarks, sexual remarks, and gender remarks are the biggest stereotypes.
So what I see in this DeafVIDEO.TV, a deaf social network with the diversities of deaf people all around the world is now focusing on the stereotyping against each others within the Deaf communities. "Deafhood", "Beasthood", "Orange Group", "Blue Group", "Deaf Trash", "Low Functions" and the lists goes on were the subject of the Deaf stereotypes.
That kind of stereotyping approaches in this DVTV should be avoided...Why can't we get along with each others and just be you!!! Take pride and believing in youself to create the video is the best solution. There is the list of the stereotype examples at the end of the video. Subscribe DJDeafJoey

Does Carly Stong's video clip that copycat such a "wanna-be" by 'Dirty Signs With Kristin' videos?
'Everyday is Carly Day' - Featuring Carly Stong in which a video clip was under FIRE for flubbing a many wrong gestures of dirty signs and insulted the ASL-Culture community.
Numerous ASL-users community have objected to the video clip on the grounds that it features incomprehensible signs that from Carly Stong's 'How to Talk Dirty Without Saying a Word' which this is a saddening testimony to how ignored and oppressed the ASL-users community. Carly is just bad in signing and her selection of really mocking and ludicrous phrases to "teach" to the public shows a huge disrespect for ASL-users and Deaf people.
Deaf viewers are outraged by nonsensical signing claiming 'How to Talk Dirty Without Saying a Word', which leading campaigner who want a good quality of learning american sign language for deaf and hearing adults as Carly claimed.
Deaf viewers said incoherent video clip makes second-class citizens out of disability sufferers, ASL-users community view is that what Carly is doing is a classic case of exploitation and wrong message to the hearing people who is learning in ASL. This is a phrase and no-so-subtle message for Carly Stong, who butchers and disrespects the langauge of the american sign language community for cheap laughs.

VIDEO: A Movie Trailer: 'Billy Was A Deaf Kid' - The classic, I hate your guts, no wait, I like you, my brother is DEAF, let's ride a couch down the street, love story.
Billy is Archie's brother. Archie loves Billy. Billy is Deaf. Archie finds a toy microphone to cure Billy's deafness. Sophie thinks it's stupid. Sophie is Archie's girlfriend. Archie loves Sophie. Sophie isn't quite sure about Archie. Archie, Billy and Sophie find that the world is much more complicated than simple sentences.
Can relationships rely solely on riding couches through automatic carwashes? Is a toy microphone the cure to deafness? And which is worse, getting slapped or getting spit on? These turn out to be very important questions in the lives of Archie, Sophie and Billy. And finding the answers come at a high price.
If all else fails, duct tape a toy microphone to your head. Billy Was a Deaf Kid has played at a handful of great festivals.

The Election Committee announced official candidates NAD Presidential elections. Chris Wagner has been selected to serve as the NAD's president for officer and regional representative positions on the NAD Board of Directors 2012 NAD Conference 51st biennial conference held in Louisville, KY from July 3-7, 2012.
The Deaf community finds disburbing and uncomfortable the words 'DEAF MILITANTS' commencement speech ideas from the Z|CSDVRS company which is qualified for the federal funds from the Federal Communications Commission (http://www.fcc.gov/) to provide video relay interpreting services is a form of Telecommunications Relay Service (TRS) for the Deaf people. However, Numerous of deaf people finds digusting facts about Z|CSDVRS by calling certain deaf people 'Deaf Militants' by Julian Moiwai, Coordinator of Social Media, Z|CSDVRS, LCC, is not acceptable, not by FCC. We need to report to FCC that the monies sent to Z|CSDVRS are used to appropriate a staff to promote hate speech within the deaf community. Read below:

I would like to ask you to do us a favor. ZVRS is currently being bombarded on social media by Sheri supporters or so-called "Deaf militiants." The Z|CSDVRS, LLC."that FCC will investigate such a hate speech and find out why Deaf Militants is an 'intergenerative' hate speech. That just fits the federal Hate Crime Statistics Act (HCSA). Why? It is a federal approach. HCSA requires the Justice department (DOJ) to acquire data on crimes which "manifest prejudice based on race, religion, sexual orientation, or ethnicity.' FCC will be required to refer your letter to DOJ. See below:

I, the undersigned, request that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) investigates an apparently slanderous email written and distributed by Julian Moiwai, the Social Media Coordinator of Z|Communication Service for the Deaf Video Relay Services (Z|CSDVRS), to his employees and contractors. The Z|CSDVRS is federally funded for the provision of Video Relay Services (VRS) that is governed by the rules adopted by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) (47 C.F.R. 65.601 et. seq.) pursuant to the FCC's authority under Section 225 of the Communications Act of 1934, as amended, 47 U.S.C. 225. Moiwai's statement that "ZVRS is currently being bombarded on social media by Sheri [Farinha] supporters or so-called "Deaf militiants (sic)," begs for an official reprimand.
I am not very comfortable with the fact that such federally funded agencies like the Z and CSD played politics during the presidential election in the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) Conference last week. The Z|CSDVRS's Vice President Chris Wagner won the NAD presidential election. I ask that the FCC stops meddling in any consumer organization by federally funded agencies.

I, the undersigned, request that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) investigates an apparently slanderous email written and distributed by Julian Moiwai, the Social Media Coordinator of Z|Communication Service for the Deaf Video Relay Services (Z|CSDVRS), to his employees and contractors. The Z|CSDVRS is federally funded for the provision of Video Relay Services (VRS) that is governed by the rules adopted by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) (47 C.F.R. 65.601 et. seq.) pursuant to the FCC's authority under Section 225 of the Communications Act of 1934, as amended, 47 U.S.C. 225. Moiwai's statement that "ZVRS is currently being bombarded on social media by Sheri [Farinha] supporters or so-called "Deaf militiants (sic)," begs for an official reprimand.
I am not very comfortable with the fact that such federally funded agencies like the Z and CSD played politics during the presidential election in the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) Conference last week. The Z|CSDVRS's Vice President Chris Wagner won the NAD presidential election. I ask that the FCC stops meddling in any consumer organization by federally funded agencies.

Disclaimer: I am NOT an interpreter! I understand that the art of ASL is very complex, and what I do is probably much closer to "Signed English" as opposed to actual ASL. The phrases I sign in these videos are things I tried to mash together from individual words I learned on the internet and from friends, and are probably not very close to the actual ASL phrases. If you would like to start learning ASL, I highly recommend it. I'm trying myself and it's a beautiful language, and there are many good resources out there (myself not included). With that said, I am not trying to disrespect anyone in the process of making these videos, I'm simply trying to have fun with my friends and learn ASL. Hi, my name is Victoria, I am a culturally Deaf person and use ASL as my primary language of communication. About your dirty signs videos... to begin with, I feel pretty sad about it all.
Don't get me wrong, I have the best sense of humour ever. My Deaf friends and I love getting creative with our signs; but trust me, the shit we come up with trumps yours infinity times. Kristin, what you're doing is IGNORANT. It doesn't help Deaf people at all. We get enough shit already when it comes to paternalism, audism, cultural oppression, phonocentrism, and general ignorance.
You responded to one person's comment on your "bitch, please" video: "Hi there! I noticed you've been commenting on quite a few of my videos that my ASL is wrong. As per the video description, I don't claim to be a licensed interpreter and I'm definitely still learning, but I'm always welcome to corrections. It seems like you're more interested in making general comments that I'm wrong and I shouldn't be making these videos, instead of actually helping me fix my signs, so I'm going to block you now. Sorry for the offense, and I wish you all the best!"
How patronizing, you need to check your hearing privilege. Acknowledging your incredible shortcomings does not make what you're doing at all right. You don't seem to be listening to Deaf people at all, so why would anyone of us want to correct your signs? you use our language the language of an oppressed minority as a way of perpetuating racism, sexism and audism. I am a Deaf woman, do you really think I will want to carry on a conversation with a hearing person who thinks it's funny to learn signs like: "fucking you is like throwing a hotdog down a hallway" or even more galling "less talk, more anal."? Disgusting!
What the hell? even today, we are STILL fighting for the right to use our language. ANY public use of sign language is fraught with deeply political messages. When I use American Sign Language in public, amongst hearing people, it is an act of disobedience and resistance against "The Man". You're not doing shit to help Deaf people in this regard. You're only making a joke of ASL, and reducing it to signs that befit the paternalistic view of Deaf people as objects to be manipulated.
As my friend Elena commented on the dailydot article about your videos, "but language is never removed from cultural politics, especially if you go on to commodify it. Quite frankly, you're doing it wrong. Wrong wrong wrong. you're teetering the line of contributing to the cultural-linguistic appropriation of ASL and consequently U.S. Deaf culture as a whole."
There is a difference between "cultural appropriation" and "cultural exchange." What you are doing is not cultural exchange. If it were, you'd have amongst other things captioned your videos to make them accessible to Deaf people. Also, your disclaimer says, "I am not trying to disrespect anyone in the process of making these videos, I'm simply trying to have fun with my friends and learn ASL." If it was just with your friends, why put it all on the internet if not as an attention-seeking manoevre? you are simply exploiting Deaf people and Deaf culture for internet popularity. And now that St. Martin's is intending to publish your smutty signs book, you are also exploiting us for financial gain. that's awful!
The best way to learn ASL, Kristin, is to participate in the Deaf community and make Deaf friends. Stop posting unfunny and offensive shit on the internet and have real conversations with Deaf people. ASL is so much more than a badly executed "twat waffle" and the internet needs to know that, too.
Just stop. Don't be just another hearing person denying Deaf people their voice.

If it was just with your friends, why put it all on the internet if not as an attention-seeking manoevre? you are simply exploiting Deaf people and Deaf culture for internet popularity. And now that St. Martin's is intending to publish your smutty signs book, you are also exploiting us for financial gain. that's awful!
The best way to learn ASL, Kristin, is to participate in the Deaf community and make Deaf friends. Stop posting unfunny and offensive shit on the internet and have real conversations with Deaf people. ASL is so much more than a badly executed "twat waffle" and the internet needs to know that, too.

Disclaimer: I am NOT an interpreter! I understand that the art of ASL is very complex, and what I do is probably much closer to "Signed English" as opposed to actual ASL. The phrases I sign in these videos are things I tried to mash together from individual words I learned on the internet and from friends, and are probably not very close to the actual ASL phrases. If you would like to start learning ASL, I highly recommend it. I'm trying myself and it's a beautiful language, and there are many good resources out there (myself not included). With that said, I am not trying to disrespect anyone in the process of making these videos, I'm simply trying to have fun with my friends and learn ASL. Actually, Kristin is insulting and offensive ASL users for misleading signed on the tube which she is NOT a licensed and certified interpreter or ASL courses as well.
