COLD LAKE, AB. - A YouTube video of an Alberta RCMP officer kicking Richard Claybert in the face has sparked an investigation and caught the attention of the province.
According to a statement released by RCMP, three officers from the Cold Lake detachment responded to complaints of a noisy party in a parking lot of a community hall early Saturday, Sept. 22.
While responding, one of the party organizers asked for police assistance in clearing the crowd. An intoxicated man refused to leave and two officers began the process of putting the man under arrest while the third officer continued crowd control. According to Metro Edmonton, it was the third time police were called to the hall that night.
RCMP have identified the man being arrested as 21-year-old Richard Claybert.

NEW YORK CITY -- Westchester Newsday - Croton woman hosts talk show for the Deaf - Television is a visual medium, but most talk shows just aren’t the same on mute. One Croton-on-Hudson woman is turning the traditional interview format on its head by telling her guests to talk with their hands.
Independent producer Aidan Mack has teamed up with White Plains Community Media (WPCM) to produce “The Aidan Mack Show,” in which Mack interviews guests exclusively in American Sign Language. The show will be one of the first of its kind designed specifically for Deaf audiences.

ROCHESTER, NY. - Rochester has more Deaf and Hard of Hearing residents per capita than the national average and a larger Deaf population than many other similarly sized cities, a new report out of Rochester Institute of Technology has found.
Rochester’s sizable Deaf community has often been assumed but was never quantified until the report, written by Gerard Walter and Richard Dirmyer from RIT’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf.
The study found other cities have more total Deaf residents per capita, but among college and working aged people, Rochester has one of the largest populations in the country. In particular, the study found Rochester has far and away the highest percentage of Deaf residents enrolled in secondary education, likely driven by NTID.
“Often times it’s difficult to understand how many people are really in the community,” said Thomas Pearson, director of the National Center for Deaf Health Research at the University of Rochester. “This has been a real challenge for anyone interested in the field.”
Using American Community Survey data, Walter and Dirmyer found there are 43,000 Deaf or Hard of Hearing residents in the Rochester metro area, about 3.7 percent of the population. That’s higher than the national average, which is 3.5 percent.
Rochester doesn’t have the highest population per capita as is often suggested, however. The report only looked at a handful of cities, but found 3.9 percent of Pittsburgh’s population is Deaf or Hard of Hearing. THE WASHINTON POST - Sign language that African Americans use is different from that of Whites.
Carolyn McCaskill remembers exactly when she discovered that she couldn’t understand white people. It was 1968, she was 15 years old, and she and nine other Deaf black students had just enrolled in an integrated school for the Deaf in Talledega, Ala.
When the teacher got up to address the class, McCaskill was lost. “I was dumbfounded,” McCaskill recalls through an interpreter. “I was like, ‘What in the world is going on?’ ”
The teacher’s quicksilver hand movements looked little like the sign language McCaskill had grown up using at home with her two Deaf siblings and had practiced at the Alabama School for the Negro Deaf and Blind, just a few miles away. It wasn’t a simple matter of people at the new school using unfamiliar vocabularly; they made hand movements for everyday words that looked foreign to McCaskill and her fellow black students.
So, McCaskill says, “I put my signs aside.” She learned entirely new signs for such common nouns as “shoe” and “school.” She began to communicate words such as “why” and “don’t know” with one hand instead of two as she and her black friends had always done. She copied the white students who lowered their hands to make the signs for “what for” and “know” closer to their chins than to their foreheads. And she imitated the way white students mouthed words at the same time as they made manual signs for them... Philadelphia police are investigating the shooting of a Deaf man in Kensington early Tuesday morning.
The shooting happened around 4:15 a.m. on the 1800 block of East Thayer Street.
Police say a Deaf man in his 20s was sitting on the front steps of a house with some friends when a suspect approached and announced a robbery.
Investigators say the suspect demanded money from the victim but the man did not understand. That is when the suspect fired a shot, hitting the victim in the stomach.

DENVER, CO. - Colorado film, 'Spirit of Love,' highlights Deaf community and life of NBA star, Mike Glenn. 'Spirit of Love: The Mike "Stinger" Glenn Story' takes basketball legend's story to big screen. The film will be presented with sign-language and captioning for all audiences. Anne Trujillo reports.
The recreation center in the heart of Denver's Swansea-Eylria neighborhood is busy for the fourth day of filming.
"Action! Rolling camera A," yells a young woman wearing headphones.
There are teens everywhere. Some are operating cameras and computers. Some are making their film debuts as young actors. There's even a retired NBA player in the mix.
All are under the careful direction of Colorado film producer Darla Rae.
"Make sure you keep your energy up. I need to feel the excitement in your voices," said Rae to the group of boys practicing their lines standing next to retired NBA player, Mike "Stinger" Glenn.
For nearly two weeks various locations in Denver have been transformed into scenes to replicate rural Georgia and locations where Glenn grew up.
"It's a feature film based on the story of how I established the nation's first basketball camp for the Deaf and hard of hearing," said Glenn.
Rae argues it's that and so much more. She says the film is named "Spirit of Love" after an award with the same name that Glenn received from the NBA Players Association honoring him for the positive impact he's had on Deaf communities across the country... Mosdeux is a Deaf owned film studio which develops, produces and distributes film. It has produced several feature and short films targeting the Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities.
The Deaf founders, Chad W. Taylor and Wayne Betts, Jr. established Mosdeux to bring the cinematic perspective to the Deaf community with stories originating from the Deaf community.

LONDON - British researchers have been able to rebuild nerves in the ears of gerbils, and it is believed the same technique could one day be applicable to Deaf humans. However, Oscar-winning actress Matlin, who has been Deaf since she was 18 months old, is worried about the implications of the development. Matlin has been tweeting her mixed feelings about the recently announced “stem cell cure” for deafness.
Matlin commented that millions of Deaf Americans who communicate in sign language do not regard deafness as a "handicap" or a "'disease' to cure." She posted these comments on Twitter: “Imagine how I must feel with my children with me at the grocery store and someone says "I heard there's a cure for your deafness!" Think.”
"Deafness cure" is trending. My concern is that it's bigger than a "trend." It involves people and not as simple as the 4 letters in "cure." According to The Telegraph, some Deaf people feel that they don’t need to be fixed by medical intervention. The National Association of the Deaf says that many profoundly Deaf people who sign consider themselves to be part of a unique linguistic group through sign language and a unique Deaf culture.

The topic about small d and big D for Deaf bothers me. I don't know about you but I have mixed feelings because it splits the groups as those who are labeled as small d and big D.

I used to think that way before as I had studied about it back in the 80's. At that time, most people seemed to agree about the concept. But now my thinking about it has changed. Why? I have several reasons to get rid of small d/big D concept but still keep the big D only. Why?
Even a person who don't identify themselves as a Deaf person and is not immersed in ASL and Deaf culture call themselves alternatively such as hearing impaired, hard of hearing or a person with a hearing loss as they avoided labeling themselves deaf which is their decision so why should we continue to use small d? What should we do with a small d in Deaf? Just get rid of it! But continue to use big D. Why? Here are several justifications.
Must we know the language? Yes, it is important but allow me to present the points. People, in general, who belong to their ethnic groups like Italian, African, etc. Do they use small i in Italian, nor small a in African although not all of them know the language or even culture especially here in America but we still refer them capital I in Italian-American or a in African-American. I am Italian but I don't know the language so should I call myself small i? Heck, no because it doesn't work that way. So why should it be different for the Deaf?
The big D in Deaf is used regardless of not having full understanding of ASL or Deaf culture. They will continue to go through a process experiencing what we call Deafhood. They will get to that point. Let's say when they finally get to the meat of ASL and Deaf culture, then they "graduated" to earn a big D? No! Deafhood is a process. That's why this kind of thinking is considered new that caused me to question whether or not that topic in the book is considered outdated.
Do you think that no, we should keep on labeling small d and big D or keep the big D for all regardless of not having the knowledge of ASL and culture and that big D represents a cultural group anyway... Hearing partially improved when nerves in the ear, which pass sounds into the brain, were rebuilt in gerbils - a UK study in the journal Nature reports.
Getting the same improvement in people would be a shift from being unable to hear traffic to hearing a conversation. However, treating humans is still a distant prospect. Fergus Walsh reports.

OAXACA, MEXICO - The Oaxaca government has invested 56 million pesos ($4.4 million) to place at least about 230 security video cameras in the downtown historic city of Oaxaca and the suburbs that are monitored by Deaf and speech impaired police.
The camcorders are 15 meters (49 feet) high and can reach various points simultaneously with an infrared camera. Ignacio Villalobos Carranza, Deputy Secretary for the Ministry of Public Security of Oaxaca, said most of the monitoring of the 230 cameras is done by law enforcement officials that are hearing or speech impaired.
He noted these police officers have a very strong Deaf and visual sense and can better detect what is happening in different places where the cameras are located; they can often remotely read the conversations of people, to the benefit of this security system that operates 24 hours a day.
Spanish-language video from BBC Mundo Deaf police to monitor security cameras in Mexico - The ability to lip read conversations is a fantastic advantage, but the project raises the question of whether Deaf people would actually be better at security monitoring in general. As far as I know, there are no studies comparing hearing and Deaf people on specific monitoring tasks but there is evidence that Deaf people have certain advantages in visual attention.
This isn’t vision in general, such as having sharper visual acuity where there seems to be no difference, but there is good evidence that Deaf people are better at noticing things in the periphery of vision and detecting movement. This potentially makes them perfect for the job and likely better than their hearing colleagues. "What is it like to be Deaf?"
The most popular the quotes in Deaf community, many people have asked me.
How are you Deaf? Deaf?... Oh, hmm... how do I explain that? Simple: I can't hear. No, wait... it is much more than that. It is similar to a goldfish in a bowl, always observing things going on. People talking at all times. It is like a man on his own island Among foreigners.
Isolation is no stranger to me. Relatives say hi and bye, but I sit for 5 hours among them. Taking great pleasure at amusing babies, or being amused by TV. Reading books, resting, helping out with food. Natural curiosity perks up. Upon seeing great laughter, crying, anger.
Inquiring only to meet with a "Never mind", "Nothing" or "Oh, it's not important". Getting a summarized statement of the whole day. I'm supposed to smile to show my happiness. Little do they know how truly miserable I am. People are in control of language usage, I am at loss and really uncomfortable there.
Always feeling like an outsider among the hearing people, even though it was not their intention. They are always assuming that I am part of them by my physical presence, not understanding the importance of communication. Facing the choice between Deaf Event weekend or a family reunion. Facing the choice between the family commitment and Deaf friends.
I must make the choices constantly, any wonder why I choose Deaf friends??? I get such great pleasure at the Deaf clubs, before I realize it, it is already 2:00 am, Whereas I anxiously look at the clock every few minutes at the Family Reunion.
With Deaf people, I feel so normal, our communication flows back and forth. Catch up with little trivials, our daily life, our frustration in the bigger world, Seeking the mutual understanding, contented smiles and laughter are musical. So magical to me, so attuned to each other's feelings. True happiness is so important. I feel more at home with Deaf people of various color, religion, short or tall. Than I do among my own hearing relatives and you wonder why? Our language is common.
We understand each other. Being at loss of control Of the environment that is communication, People panic and retreat to avoid Deaf people like the plague. But Deaf people are still human beings with dreams, desires, and needs To belong, just like everyone else. That's how I am DEAF."

GLASGOW, UK - A Scottish teacher who was born profoundly deaf is aiming to be the first Deaf person to sail single-handed, non-stop around the world past all five capes a journey made famous by the likes of Sir Francis Chichester and the legendary Sir Robin Knox Johnston.
This undertaking, being a landmark in the achievements of this incredible adventurer will also serve as beacon to the Deaf community and any of the many individuals who look to Gerry as a role model. Crowds gathered to witness this momentous and historic occasion.
Helen Moonie, Lord Provost of South Ayrshire was there in person to give her personal greetings and stepped on board the yacht to wish Gerry well and is looking forward to welcoming him back to Troon shores. Both Gerry and Quest III were blessed by Reverend Richard Durno and there were emotional scenes as Gerry bade farewell to close friends and family before waving up to the onlookers as he prepared to set sail.
Scottish production companies AC2.com Productions Ltd and Incorporated Media have joined forces to document this historic attempt and with footage shot by Gerry himself will create an intimate, emotional and inspiring record of his incredible journey.

Jeffrey Donovan and his girlfriend Mercedes Castellano were shopping inside the Express Mart on Ceralvo, off Zarzamora on Aug. 23 and had only been inside for about two minutes before deputies approached. Surveillance video shows how quickly the deputies came inside and cuffed the couple.
