VIDEO [CC] Deaf Seahawks inspires young Deaf twins.



FLANDERS, N.J. - Nine-year-old twins Riley and Erin Kovalcik were born with a genetic condition that left them partially Deaf. Last week, they saw a TV commercial featuring the Seattle Seahawks’ Derrick Coleman.



"I thought it was very touching because I didn’t think there was any athlete that actually could play that could be exactly hearing impaired like me and Erin," Riley says. "Like, I mean, seriously!"



"I saw the Duracell battery commercial. I remembered him saying he was bullied, and I was like, 'What? How is he a football player? I mean, he's really strong, but how does he let them bully him?'" Erin says.



Riley herself was picked on in school and was told not to play sports - a warning she ignored. After the Seahawks won last weekend, Riley picked up a pencil.





"Dear my inspiration Derrick Coleman," she says, reading her letter. "I know how you feel. I also have hearing aids. Just try your best. I have faith in you."



Their father Jake tweeted a picture of the letter, hoping Coleman would see it.



"I just wanted him to know how much he's doing for Deaf kids and little kids and all kids with disabilities," Jake says. "It doesn’t matter that you're deaf. It doesn't matter that you may have some other disability. You can be exceptional too."



The Seattle Seahawks' Derrick Coleman makes fans' dream come true with tickets to the Super Bowl.

EXCLUSIVE: SWAT standoff with Deaf man in Grand Prairie ends peacefully.



GRAND PRAIRIE, TX. - (KVUE News) A standoff with police ended peacefully Monday morning when a man upset about his girlfriend's arrest surrendered after threatening to kill himself.



According to Grand Prairie police spokesperson Lyle Gensler, police responded to a domestic situation at the Sugar Creek Apartments in the 900 block of Duncan Perry just after midnight Monday and found a man and a woman - both legally Deaf - involved in a dispute outside their apartment.



Police determined the woman was intoxicated, and she was arrested for public intoxication.



The arrest upset her boyfriend, who called 911 using Texas Relay, a service that provides telephone access for people with speech or hearing loss. He indicated he had a gun and told dispatchers he wanted his girlfriend to be released from custody or he'd kill himself.



"He has a computer in there that he can talk to via Skype and talk to a live person, and that person can relay to us what he's signing," an officer explained during the standoff. "And that's only if he wants to talk to us.

Leala Holcomb created a personal historical documentary on her 5-generation Deaf family's experiences in Deaf education for the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention conference in 2013.



Leala Holcomb learned from her parents and grandparents that American Sign Language-English bilingualism is not an old approach to educating Deaf children. Why? Sign language was banned from all classrooms until 1970s. In contrast, the listening and spoken language approach has always been enforced as the primary and sole mode of communication in Deaf education, including the signing schools, for at least over a hundred years. Signing schools only meant Deaf kids were able to sign during recess and dorm.



Very fascinating video on the history of Deaf education and debunks the false narrative that sign language in Deaf education is "old" and spoken language is "new" while the opposite is true.



In the end of the video, her 5-year-old nephew talks about his experiences receiving education in languages that are fully accessible to him without any frustrations and struggles gives her hope that they are going in the right direction by giving all Deaf children whole through American Sign Language and English (in all modalities).





Disclaimer: Leala Holcomb recognize that including educational degrees in their introduction violates Deaf culture norms. Due to the classist and elitist nature of the EHDI conference, Holcomb felt the need to include this background information in order to show sign language was not detrimental to their academic success which is contradictory to the mainstream ideology and perspective.

(CBS News) - A television commercial starring Seattle Seahawk’s fullback Derrick Coleman is the latest Internet sensation. Coleman is the only athlete in NFL history to play offense, despite the fact he is legally Deaf.



Now, he’s getting ready to break one more barrier - the Super Bowl.



When the Seahawks take on the San Francisco 49ers, no one will be paying better attention than Coleman. “I have to be aware,” he told CBS News’ Bill Whitaker. “I have to be focused more than everybody else.”



Diagnosed with profound hearing loss, Coleman relies on lip-reading and his own unique way of communicating with the quarterback.



"He knows to look at me if he makes an audible at the line of scrimmage,” said Coleman. “He knows just tell everybody and just turn back at me one more time and he'll tell me the play." It's the way he's always played the game.





When the world tells you "no", you have two options: You can roll over and quit or you can trust your power. Derrick Coleman, running back for the Seattle Seahawks, trusted the power within.

He told Whitaker that he’s “capable of doing what everybody else can do,” despite his hearing loss. “You can't use your problem as an excuse,” he said. “Because you use an excuse, you're not going to get to your dream. “



He was taught that philosophy at an early age. To really know Coleman’s story you have to meet the parents, his mother, May Hamlin and father, Derrick Coleman, Sr. "You feel that uncertainty, that fear as a fear as a parent, you know, that, is my child going to be OK," said Coleman, Sr.. His mother told Whitaker that Coleman was “definitely teased, he was bullied” and kids would call him “four-ears."



“My mom always said people who make fun of you and are trying bring you down - they're already down. They're trying to bring you to their level,” said Coleman.

NEW YORK CITY - The original video clip of an animatronic "devil baby" in a remote controlled stroller goes on a rampage through the streets of New York City and hidden cameras record people's reactions.



Hear a baby crying in an unattended stroller on the street? Of course you should investigate it. Just be warned that said baby might be part of a viral marketing stunt that will scare the living bejesus out of you.



The folks at Thinkmodo rigged this remote-controlled stroller with a demonic animatronic infant, replete with the ability to headbang, vomit, and just look downright possessed.





When the Thinkmodo team took their creation to the streets of New York, many a Good Samaritan fell victim to the devilish prank, and the reactions are priceless.



You might remember Thinkmodo from their last viral video creation: the Telekinetic Coffee Shop Prank in Manhattan, which, as it turned out, was a promotion for the movie "Carrie."

EXCLUSIVE VIDEO: Traffic stop involving Deaf man under investigation, OHP troopers suspended.



OKLAHOMA CITY - (NewsChannel 4) On Jan. 3, court records claim Pearl Pearson fled the scene of a car accident in south Oklahoma City.



An affidavit claims that when Pearson was pulled over along the S Eastern Ave. exit, just off I-40, he resisted two officers and refused to comply with repeated orders to display his hands.



There was a seven-minute altercation. It does not say whether the officers were aware that he is hearing impaired.



Late Tuesday Pearl’s attorney, Billy Coyle, says “My client is completely innocent of these allegations. We are waiting on the OHP (Oklahoma Highway Patrol) report and we are sorting through the facts of the case. My client is profoundly Deaf and was trying to give officers his specialty license during the stop”.





He says his client, a deaf man, was brutalized at the scene, at the hospital and continued at the jail.



One neighbor said the incident is a misunderstanding by troopers that went too far. “I know they do dangerous jobs and they put their lives on the line, but that is over the top,” Sacia Law said. “It’s completely unacceptable. Seven minutes of just basically beating someone?”



The OHP said our request for an interview has been forwarded to the proper division for consideration.



NewsChannel 4 received a statement Monday evening regarding Pearson’s arrest.



Lt. Brian Orr, with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, said, “We can confirm the arrest and charges were filed for leaving the scene of an accident and resisting arrest. The case went to the Oklahoma County District Attorney and any details of this case will have to come from the DA’s office. We will review the arrest administratively and if it is determined there were violations of department policy, we will take appropriate action.”



NewsChannel 4 learned on Tuesday the two Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers involved, Eric Foster and Kelton Hayes, have been suspended with pay while the investigation into this incident continues.

VIDEO: Sign Language Frees Cambodian Deaf From 'Prison'



PHNOM PENH - At a hairdresser's shop in the Cambodian capital, there is none of the usual chit chat you might expect when getting a haircut because the barbers are all Deaf.



They have graduated from the only education course for Deaf adults in Cambodia, where the vast majority of people with hearing problems never had the opportunity to learn sign language.



"I didn't have any contact outside of my family. It was like being in prison. I was stuck there. I couldn't do anything. I didn't have any money. I didn't have any education," barber trainee Oeun Darong, 27, explained in Cambodian Sign Language. Until the late 1990s, Cambodia was one of the few countries in the world without its own sign language.





But that is changing thanks to the work of American priest Charlie Dittmeier, who began to develop the kingdom's own version with help from foreign linguists and researchers after he was posted in the Southeast Asian nation 13 years ago.



"We get people coming to us at the age of 25, 30, 35. They have never been to school a day in their life. They have no language," said Dittmeier.



His Deaf Development Program (DDP) is one of only two groups running schools for people with hearing problems in Cambodia. The other one is for children.



About 30 Deaf students aged 16 or older are currently taking a two-year course at the DDP centre in Phnom Penh, learning simple sign language, writing, reading and other life skills, said Dittmeier.



A third year is spent in job training like at the barber shop, where the students receive instructions given in sign language on how to offer hair cuts, shaves and ear cleaning.

TheHolism' statement quote: This term 'Friend Whoring' came out of my "mouth" when I had an issue with a friend who visited us earlier this year. I checked the Internet to see if this term was used or even appropriate for what I was talking about. And it was!



This term made me think a lot about what I've seen in the Internet world, especially in the Deaf community and social networking DeafVIDEO.TV.





Friend whoring is probably why people do not treasure and preserve friendship the way they would if they invested quality time in building a lasting relationship with others. Quick friends are formula for disasters and perhaps even domestic violence.



I just wanted to share this thought with the Deaf community and help them identify one of the reasons why they don't seem to get along with each other. There is no short cut to a meaningful relationship.



One has to invest quality time and energy into it, which is something very few people seem to be doing these days. It is my hope that this video will encourage us to seek quality friendships that are based on authentic relationship. -theHolism
