VIDEO [CC] - Deaf baby becomes first person in Britain to have her sign language name that means smiley face legally recorded on her birth certificate.
LONDON - A Deaf couple have become the first people in Britain to record their baby's name in sign language on her birth certificate.
Theatre director Paula Garfield, 47, and her partner Tomato Lichy, 39, from Wembley, north London, wanted to record Hazel's name in British Sign Language (BSL), but said they were initially told by their local Brent Register Office that it was impossible.
Now their personal name for four-year-old Hazel, a reference to her smiling face, has pride of place on her birth certificate - as UbOtDDstarL.
Hazel's sign name, like many others, is not simply the letters H-A-Z-E-L spelt out.
Instead it is a made-up combination of symbols which, when taken in context, describes her personality in a way only her parents and friends can fully understand.
Hazel's sign name is written as UbOtDDstarL, which represents a combination of hand movements.
The U represents the chin, bO means a 'baby O' made with the thumb and forefinger, tD means 'hands facing the signer', Dstar means 'the handshape opens' and L shows the shape of the hand.
Put that together and it makes a small O shape held at the chin, which then opens into an L shape.
Ms Garfield told MailOnline she had a battle of up to nine months with the Register Office. The issue was finally sorted around four years ago, but the case has had little publicity.
'My daughter's sign name is what it is because her first expression was a smile,' she said. 'There's no way to translate it perfectly into English.
'But we went to the register office and they said it was "ridiculous, you can't register a sign name, don't be silly". So we got in touch with a solicitor, who said the law allows people to have their name on a birth certificate "in their own language".' ... VIDEO - Sex offences claim at Donaldson's school for Deaf children in Scotland.
LINLITHGOW - Police are looking into claims sexual offences were carried out at the national school for Deaf children.
Donaldson's School in Linlithgow has been given a week to come up with a plan to deal with serious concerns about the way the school is being run.
Police are also assessing allegations. It is understood they relate to claims of serious sexual offences and how some people at the school responded to them. The school said it was unable to comment at this time.
A spokesperson said: "This is a sensitive matter and with internal investigations ongoing, we are unable to comment on the names, job titles or any other specifics of this case".
BBC Scotland understands some allegations are historical in nature.
Insufficient progress: Donaldson's is a grant-aided special school (GASS) supported by the Scottish government.
Local authorities from all over Scotland and the north of England refer pupils there and fund their placements. The notice calling for an improvement plan within a week is the first of its kind to be issued for 15 years.
A report from Education Scotland last year criticised leadership at the school - and a follow up report said insufficient progress was being made putting things right.
The school has stressed its first priority is always the safety and wellbeing of pupils and a new principal was recently appointed. Work is underway to come up with the improvement plan before the deadline. Source

VIDEO [CC] - Deaf people should be treated as equal and not discrimination.
This video to educate for hearing people which apparently to stop treating Deaf and Hard of Hearing people as second-class citizen. The business corporations or small companies often denied the job applicants which Deaf and HOH feels treated as less important than those of other people in the same society.
We don’t hire Deaf people here.”
“I’m sure you can do lots of things. But this is not the job for you.”
"The next time you come in here, bring an interpreter.”
“I think you people would rather work with people of your own kind.”
Unfortunately, when Deaf and Hard of Hearing people look for work, they may encounter employment discrimination. Prospective employers can discriminate, either openly or subtly. This discrimination happens because of either overt prejudice, or because of ignorance about deafness and hearing loss. For example, an employer may errenously think that a Deaf employee will need an interpreter all of the time.
Deaf People Can Do Anything Except Hear!
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which was amended by the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act of 2008 ("Amendments Act" or "ADAAA"), is a federal law that prohibits discrimination against qualified individuals with disabilities. VIDEO [Signed] - #Marriage Equality controversy in the Deaf community.
The last several days, some Deaf and Hard of Hearing uploaded the video about the Marriage Equality after the National Association of the Deaf shares the video "#MarriageEquality" which lead the controversy of the marriage between adults with animals or underage. Ridiculous!
Most of the United States of America population including straights and LGBT will not accept or allowed anyone taking advantage of animals or underage. They'll go to prison. The real argument is consent is required. Can animals consent to marriage? NO!
Can underage consent to marriage? Of course not! The parents of underage will not allowed it. They also talked about LGBT not be able to have children and they will be the end of their generations. Not really. It is not that LGBT don't know about it if they realized they're gay and have relationship with their lovers. They knew that when they have relationship with their lovers. They can adopt or have someone carry their babies.
Some lesbians like the straight females go to sperm bank to pick a donor and they can have babies. It's not the end of their generation .
The vloggers' arguement have flaws. It's senseless since all of them are anti-LGBT just like what some conservative Republicans talked about. It's plain stupid!

VIDEO: [CC] - Lifeguard rescues Deaf dog that got stuck in mud at San Diego beach.
SAN DIEGO (ABC News) - A lifeguard rescued a service dog that became stuck in mud at Dog Beach in Ocean Beach Wednesday.
Just after 5 p.m., a woman told authorities that she was walking the dog which belonged to a quadriplegic veteran when the animal somehow broke free and ran away. The dog, a German wirehaired pointer named Rita, then became stuck in a muddy area of the beach.
"It was up to her neck and it was terrifying," said Joey Riley, the veteran's caregiver. She was signing to the 12-year-old dog, which is Deaf.
"As I stepped, my feet would sink down into the mud so I backed up so that I didn't get into the same situation as she did," said Riley.
It was a situation she was well aware had killed a man a year earlier, who became trapped when the tide washed in. Lucky for Rita, help arrived in the form of a lone rescuer, San Diego Lifeguard Chuck Davey.
"I was able to get the front paws onto the board and then I had to dig down into the organic matter and pull the dog up onto the board," he said. Using a surfboard, he was able to free the dog from the thick mud. Riley made her way to the animal and was able to call it over. No injuries were reported. Source

Mark Villaver has danced behind some impressive celebrities like Usher Terry Raymond. But he's never looked better on the dance floor than in this video, where he and his mom throw down some super smooth moves to Usher. Mark's mom is Deaf, but judging by her flow, she has no problem finding her groove.
In the introduction to the video, uploaded to YouTube in mid-October, Mark asks his mom in sign language if she'd like to dance. She signs back, visibly excited, "Yeah!" prompting a dance routine which will absolutely knock your socks off.

ASL VIDEO: Deaf young woman bullying victim - Not Deaf Enough ?!
Deaf blogger Janelle J White also known as Janelle Joy amazed at the responses she have gotten from her vlog on Facebook.
Janelle more amazed at the comments made by those who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing, who's comments are borderline bullying. She have been called many names, told to kill herself, and told that she is a disgrace to Deaf and Hard of Hearing people all because she dislike being DEAF.
It is time to stop all discrimination and how better to set a good example for the hearing world than to focus on how we treat each other. It is time to stop inner-culture discrimination. No limits starts with you Janelle Joy Hate Being Deaf Today.

EXCLUSIVE VIDEO [ASL] - Statistics Report - What we know about the data on college sexual assaults in the United States.
This article focuses on the hot news out there on the internet about Gallaudet University being No. 1 on the list with highest numbers of rape reports.
For Gallaudet, a college for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, the answer might simply be that campus officials speak sign language. As one Gallaudet offical told Emily Shire at The Daily Beast: “Our students are more likely to go somewhere on campus and report assault than go to a hospital because they have direct access to someone who speaks American Sign Language.”
Ricky Taylor also known as Ridor9th's vlog explains about the Judicial Affairs & Honor Codes in colleges & universities, plus Gallaudet's community at large. Plus, Taylor was sexually assaulted, too in 2002. Not many people knew of that as well - only 8 or 10 knew the truth.
WASHINGTON POST - The rise in reported sexual assaults on campus may be attributable to more awareness and, importantly, better procedures. College rankings are a pernicious business particularly so if you’re looking at sexual assault statistics.
Thanks to the 1990 Clery Act, colleges are required to report data on campus crime every year, including the number of incidents (or attempted incidents) of rape or sexual battery. But it’s pretty obvious that this number depends not only on the prevalence of sexual assault on campus, but also how diligently the college handles allegations of rape. As Nick Anderson reported recently, there are pending investigations at 89 colleges over how these schools dealt with reports of sexual violence.
A quick glance at the colleges with the most per-capita reports of sexual assault shows that they tend to be small, liberal arts colleges. (We’ve averaged the data for 2011 and 2012 to get a smoother picture.) It’s possible that Gallaudet, Grinnell, and Reed are the most sexually violent campuses in the nation, but it’s more plausible that these campuses have cultivated an environment where survivors feel more comfortable speaking out ...
